A global industry with generally good pay, Pharmaceuticals offer a variety of roles depending on background, education and experience. The industry general appeals to those looking to be involved in helping the sick. A main decision to be made early on is whether you intend to head down the clinical research or medical affairs path. Clinical is heavily technology and research based, while medical works on the commercial side of the company. Commercial roles involve working with sales and marketing teams on licensed drugs and forming personal relationships with medical practitioners.
The industry carries out more research in the UK than any other, offering a huge amount of employment. Pharmacy degrees, sales experience or even experienced MDs wishing to leave practicing are all common backgrounds to land a role in this industry.
Clinical researchers will often require chemistry, maths or biological science degrees to develop and test new products in the lab. Pharmacists require an advanced Pharmacy degree, these medical practitioners work in local drugstores or hospitals and are knowledgeable about filling drugs prescribed by doctors and their interactions. Commercially, sales rep roles appeal to those not so medically or scientifically minded, but rather those with strong personal and sales skills. They will often visit doctors to talk them through the drug, research backing it up, and cost.
