Care assistants help vulnerable people to have comfortable, dignified and enjoyable lives. They might work in hospitals, care homes or private houses, with people who are elderly, disabled, or with physical or mental health problems. They are also sometimes called care workers, support workers, or nursing home assistants. They usually work with the guidance of other healthcare professionals, especially nurses.

Skills

Care assistants need to have a combination of practical, administrative and people skills. They have to be ready to help with tasks like eating, washing, dressing, giving out medicine, checking up on patients and chatting with them. They need to be aware of laws and best practices for taking care of their patients, and be able to keep track of paperwork. They also need great communication skills, so that they can work effectively with other healthcare professionals and build good relationships with their patients.

Qualifications

If you want to be a care assistant, you’ll need to pass your GCSEs in English and Maths. You’ll need to pass a criminal record check, and if you work in children’s residential care, you’ll have to get a special qualification within your first six months at work. Some people become care assistants through an apprenticeship, and many care assistants get an NVQ, BTEC or Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Experience

It’s very useful to have experience of care, but it doesn’t have to be formal experience. You might have helped care for someone at home, or spent time volunteering. The most important thing is that you should be kind, calm, observant, respectful, and ready to help.

Salary

The average starting salary for a care assistant is around £12,500-16,000 a year (although many jobs pay an hourly rate based on shift work, rather than a fixed salary).The average advertised salary for a care assistant meanwhile is around £21,000, though this can include supervisor and managerial positions.
