{"id":10872,"date":"2017-03-13T07:29:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T07:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/migqxjzty5-staging.onrocket.site\/blog\/?p=10872"},"modified":"2025-11-26T17:50:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T17:50:21","slug":"15-cv-tips-to-get-you-an-interview-straight-from-employers-mouths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/15-cv-tips-to-get-you-an-interview-straight-from-employers-mouths\/","title":{"rendered":"15 CV tips to get you an interview, straight from employers&#8217; mouths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You could be the world\u2019s greatest when it comes to interviews, but if you can\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/career-tips\/cvs-cover-letters\/how-to-write-a-cv\">write a good CV<\/a> to impress an employer or recruiter you\u2019ll never have the chance to shine in person at an interview.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We like to think we know a thing or two about how to put together a good application, but when it comes to your CV, the most important opinion belongs to the recruiter reading it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, we asked employers what advice they had for jobseekers\u00a0just like you wanting to make it off the page and into an interview.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10875\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gaucho-restaurant-sign-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Gaucho restaurant sign\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gaucho-restaurant-sign-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Gaucho-restaurant-sign.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Rachel Rojas is the Head of Recruitment at Argentinian restaurant chain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gauchorestaurants.com\/\">Gaucho<\/a>, with over a dozen restaurants and growing throughout the UK.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) Don\u2019t include a photo<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While countries like Germany expect to see a photo accompanying a CV, it\u2019s not the norm for most jobs in the UK, and for Rojas, \u201cmore often than not, they\u2019re off-putting\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A picture may speak a thousand words, but when it comes to your CV those words will just be a distraction<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) Give reasons for leaving<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A brief summary of your reason for leaving (known among recruiters as your RFL) \u201cgives an indication of drivers and a deeper understanding of the candidate\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Remove irrelevant experience<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A CV isn\u2019t the place to list every skill in your toolkit. It\u2019s somewhere to show why you\u2019re the perfect candidate for a specific job, so include only the information that demonstrates this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don&#8217;t have any relevant experience, be sure to be upfront about it, and show that you&#8217;re eager to learn: \u201cI have not yet had any hospitality experience but I have heard a lot about your company and would love the opportunity to learn about the industry with a company such as yours\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4) Detail the new skills learnt in jobs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duties across roles and positions can often be quite similar, so Rojas recommends including \u201ca quick outline of what new skill or experience was gained\u201d in each of your roles to help set you apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5) Stick to the truth &#8211; especially if you\u2019re a previous employee<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rojas has a word of advice for employees that reapply for positions at a company they&#8217;ve previously worked for. While you&#8217;re encouraged to apply if you think you&#8217;d be good in a particular role, there couldn\u2019t be a worse time to lie about your position or tenure at that company &#8211; \u201cwe can find out!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/the-sterling-choice-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"The Sterling Choice logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/the-sterling-choice-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/the-sterling-choice.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Richard Hanwell is Associate Director at <a href=\"http:\/\/thesterlingchoice.com\/\">The Sterling Choice<\/a>, a recruitment company with over 20 years of experience in the Food, FMCG and Engineering sectors both in the UK and globally.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6) Write a CV for your audience<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While an applicant who attached wings to his CV for a Marketing Manager role at Red Bull made an impression on Hanwell, he doesn\u2019t think such a move would have been so good for an Engineer or Production Manager role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, a hiring manufacturing or factory manager will want to see \u201cexperience and abilities, clearly and quickly\u201d. In this case\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ca<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0good old fashioned CV with bullet pointed responsibilities and key achievements is much more likely to secure you an interview quickly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7) Think twice about using boxes, graphics or charts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this in mind, there really is something to say for \u2018plain\u2019 CVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infographic CVs might be a growing trend, but too much going on \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can detract you from being able to read the resume quickly and easily\u201d. For someone whose day job involves reading multiple CVs, being presented with something easy to scan makes their work much easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Hanwell explains<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cif you think that we naturally read black print on white paper and from left to right, then that is what we pick up best.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason to skip the fancy graphics? CVs are often uploaded onto company portals, and many of these \u201cd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not allow you to upload the resume if it is too complicated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Want to know more? Her advice covers a big issue for many jobseekers: gaps in employment.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9) Don\u2019t leave recruiters guessing about CV gaps<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s advice that will never go out of fashion: don\u2019t make employers leap to conclusions about why there\u2019s\u00a018 months missing from you CV. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you took time out to do something like raise your family or travel the world, you should definitely mention it. Unexplained breaks can negatively affect your chances of landing the role.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10) The minimum length of detail in a CV is 5 Years<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reville suggests that \u2018most employers require the previous five years of your job history at the minimum for their referencing purposes.\u2019 So don\u2019t just stop at three years because the two years before that you were raising a child or were struggling to find work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11) Use a covering letter to go into more detail<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you\u2019ll want to explain time out of work, the focus should be on skills and experience gained while in employment as much as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let employers see that you meet the demands of the role, and then explain away doubts they might have about missing information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Reville puts it \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant gaps can be addressed later in your CV, or in your covering letter if it has been fairly recent.\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12) Stick to the truth (again)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re not naive enough to believe that nobody has ever gained from telling a porky or two on their CV, but we\u2019re in agreement with Reville when she says that \u201chonestly is almost always the best policy\u201d when expanding on breaks in employment. Of course you should\u00a0put a positive spin on any situation, but completely making\u00a0things up will only lead to trouble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/love-energy-savings-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Love Energy Savings logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/love-energy-savings-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/love-energy-savings-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/love-energy-savings.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claire Pension is Head of People and Compliance at the Bolton-based Business Electricity Comparison site, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveenergysavings.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Energy Savings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13) Leave out unnecessary acronyms and jargon<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using some common industry jargon so that your CV shows you have the experience requested in a job ad might be unavoidable\u00a0but bear in mind that the person reading your CV might not have as deep an understanding of the role as you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, overusing acronyms and jargon doesn\u2019t make you look smart &#8211; instead, \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s annoying and doesn\u2019t add anything to your application other than time spent decoding it.\u2019 In other words, the exact opposite of getting off on the right foot. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14) Be Clear, Concise and Coherent<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the 3 Cs of CV writing and you\u2019ll <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmake it as easy as possible for the employer to identify your experience\u201d. As Rosillo puts it, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will simply not take a candidate to the interview stage if their CV has spelling mistakes, bad grammar or hasn&#8217;t been formatted correctly.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s only a CV, right? Wrong, it\u2019s a reflection of how you\u2019ll work in future. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a candidate can&#8217;t take the time to get their CV absolutely spot on, then they aren&#8217;t going to give the work they carry out for our business the attention to detail it requires.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with our research showing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/10\/06\/3-in-4-cvs-contain-spelling-errors\/\">three in four CVs contain a spelling error<\/a>, it\u2019s clearly an issue that affects most of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em>Now that you&#8217;ve made sure your CV is employer-friendly, why not see how much it&#8217;s worth?
