{"id":13464,"date":"2019-03-27T16:28:57","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T16:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/migqxjzty5-staging.onrocket.site\/?p=13464"},"modified":"2024-02-29T14:45:21","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T14:45:21","slug":"red-zones-the-uks-toughest-cities-for-recruiters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/red-zones-the-uks-toughest-cities-for-recruiters\/","title":{"rendered":"Red zones: The UK\u2019s toughest cities for recruiters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you working in a recruitment red zone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know that recruitment and talent acquisition are tough, competitive industries, but some recruitment professionals have it tougher than others \u2013 and geography plays a major role when it comes to being able to find the right candidate for a vacancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve crunched the numbers from Adzuna\u2019s vast database to compare how difficult it is to fill vacancies in 56 cities across the UK \u2013 and some of the results may surprise you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The North-South divide<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clearest message from analysis of the latest figures is that the historic north-south divide is an enduring factor in employment. In general, jobs are more plentiful across the board \u2013 and competition is more cut-throat for recruiters \u2013 in medium to large southern English towns, especially if they are anchored by a prestigious university or situated an easy commute from London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/800px-KingsCollegeChapelWest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"599\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Cambridge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Oxford<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jointly top the table as the most competitive markets, followed by <\/span><b>Swindon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Reading<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Warrington<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, between Liverpool and Manchester, bucked the trend due to a series of multi-million-pound development projects, rounding out the <\/span><b>top five recruitment red zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Region by region<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A regional snapshot paints a similar picture: <\/span><b>The South-West<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the easiest place to find a job \u2013 and the most difficult place to work as a recruiter \u2013 followed by the <\/span><b>East<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>South-East<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>East Midlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Interestingly, Adzuna\u2019s figures showed that London was on a par with the national average, reflecting that the sheer diversity of opportunities in the capital created a broader, more complex market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hardest places to find work<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, all five of the most challenging places in the UK to find jobs are in northern England. The port city of <\/span><b>Hull<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most difficult, followed by a slew of former mining and post-industrial towns: <\/span><b>Sunderland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Middlesbrough<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Salford<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Bradford<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, indicating that newer industries have had little impact on job prospects and markets today despite concerted efforts at regeneration and redevelopment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Aerial-picture-of-Hull-city-centre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"409\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>What next?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherever you work in the UK, the recruitment market is in for some challenging times ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The March 2019 Adzuna Job Market Report<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals that, while official reports are indicating a record number of vacancies in the UK, Adzuna\u2019s data (based on approximately 1m job adverts at any given time) shows an overall decline in advertised roles, down 7.1% from July 2018 and 4.3% compared to the same time the year before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wild card of a <\/span><b>delayed Brexit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adds further uncertainty to the mix: will the UK be able to access enough staff in critical areas such as healthcare if there is a significant reduction to the flow of European nationals? How will low-skilled vacancies be affected? What about the task of recruiting highly skilled niche personnel? There are more questions than answers at this stage, but hopefully the picture will become clearer over the next few months.
