{"id":18235,"date":"2023-01-19T12:41:21","date_gmt":"2023-01-19T12:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/?p=18235"},"modified":"2023-10-26T15:25:03","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T15:25:03","slug":"nursing-strikes-and-an-occupational-deep-dive-using-our-adzuna-intelligence-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/nursing-strikes-and-an-occupational-deep-dive-using-our-adzuna-intelligence-portal\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing strikes and an occupational deep-dive using our Adzuna Intelligence Portal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/news-and-events\/Press-Releases\/first-strike-dates-announced-by-rcn-after-uk-government-declines-nhs-pay-negotiations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its first ever industrial action, which took place on the 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of December with new dates announced in January this year. Of all the groups that have taken part in the wave of industrial action across recent months, Nurses have the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2022\/12\/20\/nurses-and-ambulance-workers-have-most-public-supp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most support amongst the British public<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 45% strongly supporting their strike and 21% somewhat supporting it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RCN are asking for a 19% pay rise, with low pay being blamed for a chronic shortage of staff, meaning staff are overworked and stretched thin, putting the health of patients at risk. The government says this is unaffordable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, nurses&#8217; pay has fallen in real terms (accounting for inflation \u2013 as prices rise, wages need to also rise at the same pace to \u2018stand still\u2019) by more than 10% since 2010, which has become even more pressing during the cost-of-living crisis. Weak real pay growth is a common trend across the economy, especially in the public sector \u2013 with regular pay (excluding things like bonuses and overtime) in the private sector rising by 7.0% year on year and pay in the public sector up by 3.9% (ONS Monthly Wages and Salaries Survey).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inability of nurses&#8217; pay to keep up with the increasing cost-of-living is likely behind the recent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anecdotal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of nurses leaving the sector for better paid jobs in hospitality and retail<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Low pay will be contributing to the very high levels of vacancies that we are seeing in public services, and to recruitment and retention challenges more broadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To gain further insights into unmet labour demand in the nursing profession as well as the healthcare sector more broadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/hire\/labour-market-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our proprietary dashboard, Adzuna Intelligence<\/a>, displays a wide range of aggregate statistics based on all the vacancy listings we hold on our site. This allows us to look at our data by occupation, sector, industry and skills across geographic areas at various levels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the past 6 months, there were 337,000 vacancies within the human health and social work industry. The top occupation in demand within the industry was social care workers (the top occupation in demand across all industries) with 267,000 listings. General Nurse has the third most listings within the industry, at 85,000, 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall for all occupations. The pay distribution of vacancies over the past 6 months shows that salaries for general nurses are largely bunched between \u00a330,000 and \u00a340,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18237 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-1.png 512w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-1-300x145.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below is listed the total demand and median salary for some specialist types of nurses over the past 6 months:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICU nurse \u2013 992 listings, \u00a359,000 median salary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A&amp;E nurse \u2013 1,349 listings, \u00a371,000 median salary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lead nurse \u2013 628 listings, \u00a345,000 median salary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theatre nurse \u2013 1,665 listings, \u00a368,000 median salary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiac nurse \u2013 108 listings, \u00a335,000 median salary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dialysis nurse \u2013 116 listings, \u00a330,000 median salary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As would be expected, broadly speaking there is less overall demand for each of these specialist nurses. However, these specialist positions generally offer higher salaries to compensate for higher-level skills (with the exception of Cardiac and Dialysis nurses, although this may be due to smaller sample sizes than the other types).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demand for nurses is high across the UK \u2013 the map below shows the relative demand for general nurses by Local Authority District over the past 6 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18240 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-2.png 416w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-2-244x300.png 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high demand for nurses holds across both major cities (including Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff) and rural areas (including Cornwall, Carmarthenshire and the Highlands). This is also broadly the same pattern in the healthcare and nursing sector as a whole:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18243 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-3.png 373w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Nurses-AI-Data-3-219x300.png 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/hire\/labour-market-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adzuna Intelligence<\/a> we have developed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an Interest Quotient metric, which quantifies the level of jobseeker interest in roles for specific occupations, roles within specific industries, or roles requesting specific skills, all within a given location and time period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across all occupations over the past 6 months, social care workers have the highest interest quotient, at 171.4 \u2013 for context, lorry drivers have the second highest at 135.8, a substantial gap. Listings for general nurses also have a very high interest quotient of 41.4. So whilst there is a large number of vacancies within these health and nursing sector occupations (especially relative to the number of unemployed individuals), there is also a lot of interest from job seekers in terms of clicks on the adverts. Yet these vacancies continue to remain unfilled. So what could be causing this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potentially job seekers are clicking on these adverts but ultimately decide not to apply because the salary is too low compared to those on offer elsewhere \u2013 the median salary for social care worker vacancies is \u00a321,120, nearly 35% less than the national median salary of \u00a330,000, and less than the median salary offered in the retail (\u00a322,152) or hospitality (\u00a324,000) sectors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst the median salary of general nurses (and specialist nurses) is relatively high, entry-level positions are much less well paid \u2013 the median salary for an entry-level nurse is \u00a330,000. Furthermore, this may well not be enough to compensate for the long hours and the stresses associated with the job, with many nurses experiencing burnout throughout the pandemic (although this is also a longer-term issue).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18244 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-cedric-fauntleroy-4270365-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-cedric-fauntleroy-4270365-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-cedric-fauntleroy-4270365-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-cedric-fauntleroy-4270365-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-cedric-fauntleroy-4270365-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-cedric-fauntleroy-4270365-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labour and skills shortages will also be playing into this. Since the pandemic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment-studies.co.uk\/resource\/labour-market-statistics-december-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we continue to face an inactivity crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the number of individuals participating in the labour market have fallen dramatically. This is largely being driven by increased inactivity due to long-term health conditions and disabilities, likely due partly to increased ill health in the population as a whole as Covid has increased treatment waiting lists, but also due to increased caution around returning to work amongst individuals with certain health conditions (e.g., respiratory conditions) that do not want to increase their exposure to the still-deadly virus. Early retirement is also a factor in this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Brexit will play an especially large role in skill shortages in these occupations, given that EU staff have historically made a disproportionate contribution to labour supply within the health and social care industry.
