{"id":19670,"date":"2023-09-05T16:54:15","date_gmt":"2023-09-05T16:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/?p=19670"},"modified":"2023-09-27T17:19:05","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T17:19:05","slug":"using-our-time-to-fill-data-to-track-supply-and-demand-for-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/using-our-time-to-fill-data-to-track-supply-and-demand-for-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Using our &#8216;Time to fill&#8217; data to track supply and demand for jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent update to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/hire\/labour-market-intelligence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adzuna\u2019s intelligence portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our proprietary dashboard that displays a wide range of aggregate statistics based on all the vacancy listings we hold on our site, users can now access data relating to time to fill, the number of days it takes for a vacancy to be filled. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an important metric when it comes to recruitment, allowing HR professionals to understand how difficult it is to fill the different types of roles that their organisation recruits for. When considered at an aggregate level, this statistic can also provide insights to how well the labour market our sections of the labour market are functioning and how well the demand for and supply of labour are matched.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Time to fill trends<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chart below from August\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/job-market-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK job market report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows how time to fill (the average duration of job postings in days) has evolved since we began collecting data in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19673\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Graph-3_-Time-to-fill-21-aug-2023.jpeg\" alt=\"Graph 1: Time to fill, August UK Job Market Report\" width=\"796\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Graph-3_-Time-to-fill-21-aug-2023.jpeg 796w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Graph-3_-Time-to-fill-21-aug-2023-300x217.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Graph-3_-Time-to-fill-21-aug-2023-768x555.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last few months have seen job vacancies being filled faster than at any time previously, with UK job postings remaining open for just 35.4 days on average in April 2023, down from 43.1 days on average a year prior. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general trend for the average time taken to fill a role has been falling steadily since June 2022. This was the roughly the point at which, during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment-studies.co.uk\/system\/files\/resources\/files\/IES%20briefing%20-%20Labour%20Market%20Statistics%20June%202023.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inactivity crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we are currently facing, the inactivity rate peaked and the unemployment rate troughed, i.e., the point at which the labour market was its tightest. Meanwhile, the peak in time to fill since 2016 came during the early months of the pandemic \u2013 reaching 55.1 days on average in May 2020, up 15% from just three months prior on the eve of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Best and worst cities<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at this data across the last 6-months (January to July 2023), across the UK the average (median) time to fill a vacancy was 29 days, with a 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile of 27 days and a 75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile of 34 days. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across all of the regions of England, as well as several major cities including Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool, the distribution of time to fill broadly follows this breakdown, aside from London where the 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile and median figures are the same as for the UK, but the 75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile figure is much higher at 38 days. This may reflect a greater proportion of harder to fill vacancies in the capital where vacancies tend to have higher skill demands given the types of roles located there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile figure is also higher in Scotland (37 days) than across the UK, driven by the large cities of Edinburgh (75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile time to fill = 38 days) and Glasgow (39) which may be due to similar issues as in London. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other devolved nations also have a greater skew towards hard to fill roles than England as whole, particularly Northern Ireland which has a 75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile time to fill over the past 6 months of 41.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Top hiring industries<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chart below shows the 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">percentile, median and 75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile time to fill for vacancies by the industry of the listing employer, for the top ten hiring industries (descending from left to right) in the last 6 months across the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/graph-2.png\" alt=\"Graph 2, time to fill\" width=\"596\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/graph-2.png 596w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/graph-2-300x184.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is clearly wide variation in the average time to fill vacancies by industry, as well as differences in the skew towards harder to fill vacancies. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial and insurance activities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> industry (the sixth largest hiring industry) has by far the longest average time to fill vacancies (37 days), more than 10% longer than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional, scientific and technical activities industry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (33 days) which is in second place, and these two industries also have the highest 75<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile figures with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial and insurance activities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> industry being a particular outlier. These are two industries that typically contain a large proportion of highly skilled, highly paid roles for which labour is relatively scarcer, and therefore it will take longer on average to fill any vacancies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The table below then shows this data but for the top 10 most in demand Standard Occupational Classifications -->\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile and median figures as before are largely consistent across the occupations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two teaching occupations, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2319 Teaching professionals n.e.c.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2313 Secondary education teaching professionals<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are actually slightly skewed away from harder to fill roles \u2013 this might be because schools which hire these roles are less able to adjust their \u2018output\u2019 than other forms of organisations, and if they have roles that it is hard to find suitably qualified labour to fill, they will turn more quickly to other sources such as supply teachers and non-subject specialists for instance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the most in demand occupations \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2134 Programmers and software development professionals<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (75th percentile days to fill = 42), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5354 Chefs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (38), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3556 Sales accounts and business development managers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (39) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7111 Sales and retail assistants<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (41) \u2013 are quite heavily skewed towards having a higher number of hard to fill roles, which will likely be functions of their high levels of demand (all of these roles), shortages in the specialist skill sets required to fill the roles (especially <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2134 Programmers and software development professionals<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and\/ or low levels of pay\/ quality of work (especially <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7111 Sales and retail assistants<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19696\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The time to fill vacancies is thus a valuable data point \u2013 for employers and HR professionals to identify where they might face particularly large recruitment challenges, as well as for policy makers and labour market commentators as an indication of the health of the labour market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another blog
