Many of these students pursue advanced degrees such as master\u2019s MBAs and PhDs, drawn by the promise of world-class education. In a recent publication of Universities UK (UUK), higher education contributes a staggering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universitiesuk.ac.uk\/what-we-do\/policy-and-research\/publications\/impact-higher-education-sector-uk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a3130 billion to the UK economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/stories\/cambridge-economic-impact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Cambridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alone contributing nearly \u00a330 billion and supporting 86,000 jobs, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/research\/recognition\/economic-impact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Oxford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adds \u00a315.7 billion and 28,000 jobs. Despite this impressive academic infrastructure for academic excellence and intellectual development, a critical question arises: does postgraduate education in the UK translate into better jobs prospects in the country?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Postgraduate qualifications vs. job market demands<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A significant disconnect exists between the qualifications provided by UK universities and the demands of the UK job market. Data from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/adzuna-intelligence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adzuna Intelligence Portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that fewer than 5% of UK job postings require postgraduate qualifications like master\u2019s degrees or PhDs. In contrast, bachelor\u2019s degree is required for approximately 30% of roles, while 65% of job postings demand lower academic qualifications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking down job demand by sector for the fiscal year 2023\/2024 published in the Adzuna Intelligence portal:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Postgraduate qualifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Masters and PhDs) are most sought in:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional, scientific, and technical activities (with a total of 16,746 positions for master\u2019s, 12,194 for PhDs, and 2,414 for MBAs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education (with a total of 10,878 job positions for PhDs, and 2,119 for master\u2019s degree).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accommodation and Food Services (with a total of 8,565 jobs requiring a master\u2019s degree).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial and Insurance Activities (with a total of 1,998 vacancies with required MBAs).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bachelor\u2019s degrees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dominate in:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional, Scientific, and Technical Activities (\u201933,737).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial and Insurance Activities (\u201917,830).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information and Communication (\u201913,763).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This suggest that while advanced degrees are valuable in specialized fields, the broader job market is likely to emphasise practical experience, vocational skills, and specific certifications over postgraduate education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-at-2.04.26\u202fPM-300x181.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2027\" height=\"1223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-at-2.04.26\u202fPM-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-at-2.04.26\u202fPM-1024x618.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-at-2.04.26\u202fPM-768x463.png 768w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-at-2.04.26\u202fPM-1536x927.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-28-at-2.04.26\u202fPM.png 1934w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2027px) 100vw, 2027px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Experience vs education<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emphasis on practical experience is evident in the job demand data. Sectors such as wholesale, retail, trade, healthcare, and accommodation\u2014the top demanded industries in fiscal year 2023\/2024 \u2013 often prioritize hands-on skills over academic credentials. Surprisingly, 90% of job postings collected do not specify experience requirements. Among those that do, less than 1% demand more than six years of experience, though demand for candidates with 3-5 years of experience has risen compared to those with less than two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1951\" height=\"1171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.1.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1951px) 100vw, 1951px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Adzuna Intelligence portal we are able to evaluate the association between education and years of experience for the median salaries offered during the same fiscal year 2023\/24. The first thing to notice is that higher education does offer financial rewards, but these benefits are nuanced. Median salaries reveal that a master\u2019s degree generally increases earning potential. However, a PhD only surpasses master\u2019s-level salaries for roles requiring over six years of experience\u2014a category representing less than 1% of total demand. An MBA, on the other hand, often provides the highest salary premium, particularly in senior positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.2-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1925\" height=\"1155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.2.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1925px) 100vw, 1925px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another approach to better understand the level of experience is required in the demanded jobs in UK, we evaluate data from the Adzuna Intelligence portal distinguishing the seniority level. Similarly with the years of experience, approximately 80% of job postings leave seniority unspecified. Among specified roles, junior and senior positions are most common, each appearing in about 10 and 11% of postings respectively. In addition, post-COVID-19, junior positions have shown consistent growth, potentially reflecting a shift in market needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.3-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2049\" height=\"1229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.3-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.3.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2049px) 100vw, 2049px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, by obtaining the median salaries in Fiscal Year 2023\/2024 by Seniority level, we see again that having post-graduate degrees compensate to the overall salaries. Median salary data by seniority further underscores the financial benefits of postgraduate education. For many roles, the additional years of research and expertise gained through a PhD do enhance earning potential, although master\u2019s degrees, particularly MBAs, remain highly competitive for senior positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.4-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1987\" height=\"1192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.4-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.4.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1987px) 100vw, 1987px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The talent retention dilemma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With its strong academic reputation, the UK attracts a significant number of international postgraduate students. Data from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/data-and-analysis\/sb269\/figure-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HESA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the academic year 2022\/2023 highlights 455,780 international postgraduate enrolments compared to 426,515 UK postgraduate students. Overall, 758,855 overseas students were enrolled in UK universities, compared to 2,175,530 UK citizens. While international students contribute to the UK\u2019s academic and economic ecosystem, many face barriers upon graduation, including a labor market that undervalues their qualifications and restrictive visa policies. As a result, this highly educated talent often migrates to other countries that better recognize their degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.5-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1966\" height=\"1180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.5-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/23.5.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1966px) 100vw, 1966px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The underrepresentation of UK citizens in postgraduate programs may stem from socioeconomic barriers. According to the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment-studies.co.uk\/resource\/social-class-and-higher-education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fewer than one in five young people from lower social class groups pursue higher education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This inequality limits the domestic talent pipeline for advanced qualifications, creating a reliance on international students while failing to fully harness local potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is it worth it?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postgraduate education in the UK offers clear advantages in specialized fields and certain roles, particularly those requiring advanced expertise or specific qualifications like an MBA. However, the overall job market prioritizes experience and practical skills over academic credentials, limiting the immediate value of advanced degrees for many graduates. For international students, the challenge lies not just in finding roles aligned with their qualifications but also in navigating complex visa requirements. Meanwhile, socioeconomic barriers prevent many UK citizens from accessing postgraduate opportunities, exacerbating talent retention challenges. For postgraduate education in the UK to truly pay off, a more cohesive strategy is needed to align academic outputs with market demands, support equitable access to higher education, and create pathways for retaining both domestic and international talent in the workforce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment-studies.co.uk\/\">IES<\/a>\u00a0is an independent, apolitical, international centre of research and consultancy in public employment policy and HR management.
