Extroverts interact more easily with new people and tend to feel confident talking about their own strengths. However, introverts can succeed in job interviews too, and can even play their more reserved nature to their advantage.

Are you an introvert? Introverts value and need their alone time, but are nevertheless good communicators, though they tend to communicate better in writing than in person. Interviews are very stressful for introverts as the natural desire to succeed clashes with their reserved personality.

Introvert or not, the tips below will help you through your job interview.

1. Be prepared – while extroverts will be able to answer questions on the fly, the fact that you need to prepare your answers will work to your advantage.

Being prepared will not only lessen your nerves but will also boost your chances of success. Luckily, most interviews are very similar and so are relatively easy to prepare for. However, be mindful of the fact that interviewers sometimes ask weird questions. Don’t let this catch you off guard in the interview, check out some examples of unexpected interview questions here.

In addition to preparing answers to standard interview questions you can prepare some questions to ask in return, to make the interview feel more like a conversation and less like an interrogation. This gives you a chance to demonstrate your superior listening skills and also shows that you have a genuine interest in the job.

2. Be calm – extroverts don’t find interview situations as intimidating as introverts. Try not to let your nerves show.

Don’t forget to breathe! Both before and during the interview, breathing slowly and deeply will help you keep your cool. When asked a question, take a moment to breathe and think before answering instead of um-ing and ah-ing. It will make you seem more confident and will ensure that you answer the question rather than jumping right in and rambling, as some extroverts will do.

Even if it is the last thing you want to do, smile! Body language can give away so much about how you are feeling and it is one of the things that you will be instantly judged on in any situation. Extroverts have the natural advantage in this case, as they tend to be more expressive, which is often interpreted as enthusiasm. Smiling through the nerves will help to level the playing field and will also make you feel and seem more relaxed.

3. Be positive – it sounds cheesy but a positive outlook will get you far.

To overcome your nerves, try to focus on your goals, not on your feelings: you are at the interview because you are passionate about the job. Why not take some notes with you? Print your CV and cover letter and annotate them with any points you want to bring up in the interview. This will reassure you and will make you feel more confident in your own abilities. If talking about your past successes feels like boasting, try thinking of your strengths as facts instead.

Most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Interviews are all about showcasing your strengths and presenting yourself as a valuable candidate. As long as you do this, the interview has been a success, even if you don’t get the job. Practice makes perfect!

Feeling ready for an interview?
