You might have started off brimming with ideas and passion but now you find yourself trawling job sites when you should be concentrating on the job in hand.<\/p>\n<p>If that sounds like you, then it could be time for a career change. It needn\u2019t be as radical as quitting the rat race to make jam in a country kitchen, but here are just a few things to keep in mind if you\u2019re ready to take the plunge and change direction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do you have the right skills?<\/strong> \u2013 If you do, that\u2019s great. If you don\u2019t, you might need to think about taking some courses to beef up your CV or getting some advice from someone already working in your dream job. Be it practical skills or getting to grips with new theories and ideas, you have to know your stuff to make the leap.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you have the qualifications?<\/strong> \u2013 If you\u2019re thinking of going self-employed it might not matter, but if you\u2019re trying to get a foot in the door of another company it almost certainly will. If it\u2019s a complete change of direction, remember you\u2019re starting later than the competition and lack the experience. Getting a piece of officially stamped paper will give you a better chance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you have transferable skills? <\/strong>\u2013 No matter how big the leap, most jobs have some level of cross-over you can emphasise in your application. Every company values good communication and interpersonal skills, for instance. You might need to stretch it a bit with some creative thinking, but emphasise the similarities between your current job and the job you want.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Can you call in favours?<\/strong> \u2013 Always make use of your contacts, if you have them. Friends of friends can be very useful in a big career change.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have any contacts in your new field, get yourself out to some networking events and make a bee-line for the people you want to impress and tap for information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, you\u2019ll also need some idea of what exactly it is you want to do.
