Regardless of industry or field, as a customer service professional your main purpose will be to interact with your customers – by phone, email, in person or however else – in order to address any questions or queries they may have.
This can be a demanding job – as you are the face of the company you’re representing, even the rudest customers must be treated with respect and importance, so you’ll need patience and the ability to keep a calm head. But for a natural problem-solver it can also be a rewarding job – by providing solutions you’ll have the power to make people’s day.
The ideal customer service applicant will have a track record of conflict resolution – evidence of negotiation skills won’t hurt either, as you’ll regularly need to help customers reach a compromise that is cost-effective for your business. Needless to say, your communication skills should be exceptional, and your interviewer will want to see whether you can effectively communicate your passion for the company’s product or service during your interview.
You’re likely to need to use computer software in your role – it might even mention this in the job advert. You’re likely to be given full training for most roles, but providing evidence of being able to use similar software, or general computer literacy, will show you’re worth investing in.
At a managerial level, you may be expected to manage a small team, and you’ll be involved with developing and expanding the company’s policies to adapt to customer needs and business changes. At this level, you will also work on public customer information about the company’s products or services.
