As a university student you could be studying in any field of education – from Maths and Science to Graphic Design, English Literature or Textiles.

What you’ll almost always have in common is that you’ll need a CV if you want a job – whether it’s for a part-time role while you study, or a full-time temporary role during your breaks.

Working while at university is a great idea – and not just because it will help with your finances. You’ll pick up vital skills which will set you apart from the competition in the eyes of employers, even if these role aren’t directly related to what you want to do after graduation.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – first you’ll need a CV to help you land that student job in the first place.

If you haven’t held a previous job before, stress the skills you’ve picked up at school or at university – working as a team on presentations or in sports club, attaining good grades through your committment to studying, or being active in social committees all demonstrate that an employer can trust you. For summer placements you write a cover letter explaining why you are interested in the position, and how this interest, combined with what you’ve picked up on your studies so far, makes you an ideal candidate for the role.

Most part time student jobs are likely to pay minimum wage, but placements may pay more.

Responsibilities & Skills:

Your responsibilities and the skills required to do them will differ depending on what role you are applying for. Make sure you have a clear understanding of this from the job description, and tailor your CV so that it addresses them.

Again, any qualifications you might require will depend on the position in question. If you want to work in a position that involves serving alcohol you will need to be at least 18 years of age.
