Bedford lies on the River Ouse, 26 miles west of Cambridge. Around 79,000 people live in the town. There's a rail service to London St Pancras and easy access to the M1.
The spire of St Paul's church rises above the town. The old Cardington Hangers also loom on the skyline, once used for building airships, but more lately as film sets for Batman Begins. Author John Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress while locked up in the county gaol in the 1670s.
Local attractions include the Bedford Museum and the Cecil Higgens Gallery. Bedford's River Festival is held every two years. The town boasts numerous parks, three swimming pools, an outdoor centre, an international athletics stadium, the Corn Exchange music venue and three theatres.
Bedford holds open-air markets weekly in Harpur Square and St Paul's Square. The town centre offers all major high street brands too.
