This is a pretty diverse job description and comes in many different shapes and sizes; but generically speaking, to be a Consultant means to provide objective specialist, expert advice to improve business performance. Consultants usually specialise in one particular field such as human resources, marketing, IT, business strategy, financial, management, social media, e-business and operations. Consultants dig into the nitty-gritty; the strategy, management, and day to day running of the company and highlight things that can be improved and how to improve them. Consultancy firms vary from large corporate firms that can handle end-to-end solutions to smaller firms that specialise in niche markets, skills and industry.
To be a rockstar consultant it helps to have a really analytical mind. If you're at home with problem-solving, number crunching and objective analysis then this is the career for you. Strong people skills are a must have as you will often have to communicate your findings to a team of employees and inspire them to follow your recommendations. Creativity and innovation are also essential skills to set you apart from the competition. Consultants often have to cope under pressure and tough challenges so flexibility is another key skill required. Above all, however, you need to have excellent knowledge and commercial awareness of whichever business environment you choose to work in.
