Engineering is a comprehensive discipline spanning a number of areas from agriculture, biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental and the nuclear and petroleum industries - just to name a few areas of interest. Engineering professionals work on testing, producing, designing and developing products, functions in machines, software, pharmaceutical, buildings and so on. Engineers can specialise in sales, in management as well as the technical aspects of an operation.
Each area of Engineering has a basic training and education which can be applied to other fields so an Electronic engineer, for example, may work in Computing or in Communicating or even Medicine.
Engineers help design, build and maintain systems so you will need to be able to project manage. You might work on all aspects of the design from software solutions, testing to construction and analysis of the area you are working on. Engineers need to be analytical, creative and see the big picture for a successful outcome. You will need an interest in maths, sciences, IT and engineering and be ready to study to degree level and carry on studying throughout your career. The field of engineering is constantly evolving.
