Architectural engineers apply engineering principles to the construction, planning, and design of buildings and other structures. Usually working within a bigger team, architectural engineers are responsible for the different systems within a building, structure, or complex; whereas other engineers and architects will be primarily concerned with the aesthetics of building projects.
Architectural engineers require a broad understanding within both the architectural and engineering industries, including mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and others, often focussing on:
• the structural integrity of buildings
• the design and analysis of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems,
• efficiency and design of plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems
• acoustic and lighting planning
• energy conservation issues

Responsibilities & Skills

Primary responsibilities include:
- Researching, analysing and creating reports on a structure's ability to withstand the stress of extreme weather or climate conditions
- Researching, analyzing and creating reports on air quality, energy efficiency, or the impact new construction has on the environment
- Working on legal or financial consulting regarding construction planning, processes, equipment, or issues
Skills and qualities desired:
- Architectural engineers often work in teams so being a good team player (as well as using intuitive independently) is important
- Applicable engineering experience in facility/equipment design
- Experience in creating/executing engineering processes
- Strong verbal, written & presentation skills to convey technical information to a variety of personnel
- Ability to multi task and interface with a multi-user customer base and manage workload of multiple projects of varying complexity
- Fine attention to detail
- Able to document and explain design and scope content to both technical and nontechnical team members

Required Qualifications

  • Degree (usually a minimum of five years), including practical experience in the field (design, labs, studios and on site)
  • Requires minimum of 5 years direct experience or a Master's degree with minimum 4 years direct experience in an Architectural engineering discipline
