The British manufacturing industry, although often maligned is still one of the strongest in the world. Those that work in it include engineers, machinists, assemblers, welders, quality controllers and production managers.
Manufacturing involves the process of turning raw materials and/or components into products. The manufacturing market in the UK is becoming increasingly more advanced with no single industry dominating it but major areas including aerospace, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and electronics.
The number of manufacturing jobs vary around the UK with less than 3% of London jobs being in manufacturing compared to over 12% of jobs in the East Midlands. Some industries tend to be concentrated in one or more regions. For example, aerospace has a heavier presence around the Bristol area, motor vehicle manufacture takes place largely in the Midlands, and oil and gas-related industries are concentrated in Aberdeen and the surrounding area.
