Historically famous for Cheshire cheese and woven silk, it is thought that Cheshire was founded by Edward the Elder in 980. Today, as then, it covers a wide plain known as the Cheshire Gap, which separates the Peak District of Derbyshire to the East and the hills of North Wales to the West.
Tucked away in the North West it remains less densely populated that the counties to its South and East. It is also one of the least ethnically diverse counties, with 97.3% of its population White and 81% identifying as Christian in the 2001 census.
Perhaps the two most famous inhabitants of Cheshire have been Daniel Craig, the 6th Bond actor, from Cheshire's largest and namesake city, Chester, and Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland and general dude (if slightly weird), from the smaller Daresbury. So that explains the Cheshire cat!
