Brighton & Hove City Council is a unitary authority and city on the south coast of England. It is England's most vibrant and cultural seaside city. It was formed as a unitary authority area on 1 April 1997 by the merger of the East Sussex districts of Brighton and Hove. It immediately applied for and was granted borough status. In 2000 it was awarded city status together with two other UK towns, to mark the Millennium. Brighton and Hove is not part of the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, but it is still part of the ceremonial county of East Sussex.
