There is a good benefits package with British Gas, the share scheme and the pension package are good. They are doing work to update and upgrade now and evolve into a more modern organisation and bringing in new practices and tools It is an interesting business where the various departments have a wide variety of different skill sets required and there are offices all over the UK
Not enough focus on customer service A lot of redundancies in the past few years in the support departments Some antiquated technologies, especially in the home service function The best salespeople have been promoted into people management positions. They are still all about sales, sales, sales and don't understand about leadership or people development. On top of this there is a protective approach to who can enter the management elite.

Some of the few redeeming feature of British Gas are the staff - some of whom are excellent people with a very thorough and professional attitude, you can learn a lot from them. Good team work and understanding between various teams. The workplace prides itself on being on time, and it is a great feeling to deliver results on time.
The company runs like a marriage of corporate and public sector interests - there is far too much micro management, bureaucracy and general paranoia associated with even the smallest initiatives taken by the employees and workers. This completely breaks down the trust between staff, and causes a weird form of office politics to arise. The IT and infrastructure is very outdated, and could cause some serious problems in the near future. The HR team is not really a HR team, dont expect them to understand anything about basic human needs.
