67% of employees recommend this company to their friends

“Good managers, busy workplace, thriving business, difficult hours and pace of work”

Good direct in-store management over me, earned my respect especially as they were all happy to get stuck in themselves and walk the talk Felt valued by them not just a number Starting from zero I learned an awful lot about the fashion retail industry in a very short time Working pace is full on, never a stop or down time moment to regroup, you have to just keep up and this helps build stamina and there's always something to do and get involved with

It's not for the faint-hearted, you have to be prepared to toughen up if you're not used to that pace of work Understaffed really for the amount of work that needs doing. I think management in particular suffer by this, not really having the time needed to oversee and take proper control of issues etc Long hours, difficult shift patterns, weekend working, early starts, late finishes etc Not enough investment in career development Clientele sometimes can be shocking

In-store managers prepared to roll up their sleeves and work alongside you when it's really busy

“Great working environment”

The company really pushes you to acheive your potential, the staff in general is highly motivated and really believes in the company and the workplace therefore is a very positive place with a lot of energy and support from staff and management if youre doing good work. The training on offer is quite good too. Great brand to enter fashion retail with.

The company can often seeem understaffed and workloads can start to get on your nerves, especially if you work the night shifts. Environment can be tough, some customers are not the most pleasureable to work with and can ruin your day.

Staff highly motivated about the brand

“Horrible place to work especially if you're young”

The people that work there

How boring the job is, how low the pay is, how they don't listen to you especially about your hours of work. Oh and they expect you to automatically know things with next to no training

We are a leading clothing and homeware retailer, with over 200 stores across the UK and Middle East. We offer product at half the price of the high street with the same outstanding quality. It is this undeniable quality and great service that make up the core of our success. We know what is important and here at Matalan we are all about making our people happy! Back when legwarmers, big hair and even bigger shoulder pads were all the rage – we’re talking early 1980s – our founder John Hargreaves discovered the US out-of-town retail outlet. Despite their size, these huge shopping emporiums were able to offer low prices because they were situated outside expensive areas. They also negotiated directly with their suppliers, cutting out the middle man and getting cheaper costs. Hargreaves was now inspired! He decided to bring the concept home and in 1985 he opened the very first store in Preston. Like all the best ideas – Our’s was simple, but pioneering: locate out of town, keep overheads low, and pass the savings onto the customer!
