“Best department store in the world!”

High-class retail environment, with relatively pleasant working conditions. Great central location. Looks good on your work record, since Selfridges is a prestigious name, recognized worldwide. Team of hard-working professionals who are very welcoming to new members of staff.

Hours are often demanding, and you're expected to work overtime as a matter of course. Pay could be a whole lot better. Managers tend to ignore legitimate staff concerns and sometimes even welfare issues. Lots of ambitious people in middle and senior management, all looking to climb the greasy pole.

Selfridges was bought by its current chairman, Galen Weston, in 2003. He and his wife Hilary are closely involved with the development and growth of the company and their daughter Alannah is creative director. Paul Kelly became chief executive of Selfridges in February 2004, after ten years as managing director of Brown Thomas in Dublin. He has worked with the Weston family for over 20 years. In the year ended 31 January 2009, Selfridges’ sales rose by 6 per cent to £809 million and profit grew by 8 per cent to £88.1 million. In 2011, Paul Kelly was appointed Managing Director of the Selfridges Group Ltd (formerly Wittington Investments), leading the retail groups holdings: Selfridges UK, Brown Thomas of Ireland, Holt Refrew of Canada and DeBijenkorf of Holland. As his replacement Anne Pitcher was named Managing Director of Selfridges UK, after holding the position of Buying & Merchandising Director in the previous years.
