Reviews:

“Poor pay, but a great place to develop and have fun”

Amazing, amazing people. I have never worked with such an incredible bunch of individuals as i have at Virgin Active. I'd also like to give a shout out to the management team at Virgin who always made things fun and exciting!

The pay. Ok, they pay trainers slightly better than Fitness First, but it's still meagre wages. Also a shame that benefits from other parts of the group (like discount flights) don't carry over to Virgin Active!

Richard Branson's beard.

“Wonderful colleagues and good working environment but terrible salary”

Fellow staff were so amicable and there was a real family atmosphere working here. A huge perk is that you get a free gym membership for yourself and one other family member or friend. Another perk is their discount scheme 'Tribe'. There are some opportunities for further training and some of these are funded, albeit with clauses.

You will work long, long hours, on average I worked a minimum of two hours more than stated on my shift. The salaries are terrible, we are talking minimum wage for staff and management level. There is no bonus scheme, the emphasis is on the discount scheme 'Tribe'. Whilst the company does support training and offers to pay this, if you sign up to this you must commit at least a year to the company or you will have to pay back what you owe for this training if you leave. The courses actually offered aren't actually industry accredited anyway- they are often internal 'Virgin' courses. Work/life balance is bad due to HAV ... Getting paid minimum wage whilst living in London-unacceptable.

“Badly paid, no standardised procedures to adhere to, good access to gym and facilities”

There is a probation period as a fitness coach, but if you pass this you get access to some good training opportunities Not only do you get free use of the club and all the facilities but you are also given a complimentary membership to pass onto a friend.

Compensation is limited, minimum wage is just not competitive in the fitness market Corporate standards and values sound good, but are not put into practice unfortunately Inconsistent management, every manager insists on a different way of working, means that even simple processes are at odds with themselves a lot of the time Staff don't last long in the muddle that's created Somebody higher up needs to get a grip and sort it out, set up procedures that all the managers adhere to It would help if there were more networking between sections – maybe we could have joint meetings. Not sure why my pay is incorrect nearly all the time ... Free gym membership plus 1

“Incompetent Management. Inept Staff. Terrible Pay.”

NOTHING!!! It was only a means of gaining some gym floor experience.

Just about everything. The pay is terrible, minimum wage just like the rest of the other reviewers have pointed out especially when you consider that you have to be qualifies to work on the gym floor. You are paid an extortionate rate for the extra classes that you can do which really do not make it worthwhile, £16 or even £10 as opposed to the usual £25 or £30 that external instructors get. You will also be made to do "Fast Classes" over and over again for which you are not paid with penalties in the form of disciplinary action if you fail to meet targets. The chances are that you will jot even be traine ... Just about everything. You will also be made to do "Fast Classes" over and over again for which you are not paid with penalties in the form of disciplinary action if you fail to meet targets. The chances are that you will jot even be trained in how to do these classes if your club is anything like mine and the quality if most of these was very poor. The only "training" that I ever received was to do Spinning when all of the external Instructors were away on holiday and this qualification is neither recognised nor valid outside of Virgin and is just a way of them not having to spend money. The knowledge of the staff, especially the fitness coaches, (Who always have a high turnover rate) is poor and can potentially lead to some dangerous situations coming about due to the lack of experience and knowledge. BUT my goodness, the worst thing has to be the sheer incompetence of the management. I trained under an idiot who was the manager for both PTs and fitness coaches who had no idea of how to manage and often had to helped with basic things like doing the rota or payroll. He was also only qualified at a very basic level and showed absolutely no intention of getting further training despite the opportunities open to someone at his level. Despite his many screw ups and complaints raised against him, said idiot managed to become a manager in a bigger club through one of his friends higher up in the club. A lot of nepotism goes on in Virgin Active. The PT rates are pathetic. You only make about £7 if you do the minimum amount of 10 sessions a week more

Never want to hear the word "oomph" ever again. Richard Branson exploits people just as much as any other big Corporation. Ignore the Father Christmas beard and PR.

“No free lunches, not even free coffee and tea”

Met members that really made my days managable

Really bad pay for what's expected of you, no help with set shifts when you have children to get childcare for, don't seem to care when your in a situation that leaves you stuck for childcare ect. I even had a chest infection & was on 12 tablets a day i told them I would not be in and I was basically forced to go in and if I didn't then pretty much i might not have had a job to go back to, which I found disgraceful.

The favourtism they have with certain staff, everyone else is just a spare part.

“terrible employer, bullying, harrasment..the best decision was to leave, they treat even members with disrespect, you get harrased in a pool, steamroo”

none

unprofessional, bad standards

suports bullies

“great”
