Databases are the modern version of the filing cabinet and exist in a huge variety of industries. A database administrator will commonly work in the IT department and will be in charge of managing and maintaining a variety of databases. Accessing the database is normally done by individuals via a computer system, although the administrator may be asked to compile information. The day-to-day role will commonly include updating the system, adding new information and fixing any problems.
The role will not involve generalised maintenance of the computer network like a system administrator. This means the skills required to diagnose and fix general network problems are not required, while a more in depth knowledge of database programs will be. Depending on the scale of the company, this can be both an entry-level position or carry a lot more responsibility. For example, databases in doctors surgeries, hospitals and in the public sector, will require more experience as this material is covered by privacy legislation such as the data protection act.
