Our UK based Strategic Consultancy team undertakes a wide range of technical management consultancy projects. As an Apprentice Consultant at AECOM, you will have the opportunity to work on exciting projects within the Civil Infrastructure sector. These can include: highways asset management; highway operations and maintenance; sustainability & resilience; research & innovation; road safety; and, network management policy & strategy, for both public and private sector clients.

The role of the Apprentice Consultant is dynamic and stimulating. You will be contributing to a range of projects within Strategic Consultancy to support Project Managers and ensure that our clients achieve their requirements and objectives. This will involve working at all stages of our projects, from initial identification and tendering, to optioneering and feasibility and on to delivery.

We support our apprentices through on-the-job training and both college and university training, investing in your career and the future of AECOM. As a part of this learning, you will undergo studies alongside your role and work towards a formal degree qualification over the course of the four-year apprenticeship programme. This will be fully supported by AECOM, with dedicated study days provided and access to a range of online and blended learning tools.

Strategic Consultancy’s client range is diverse and includes national and private asset owners and operators, infrastructure construction organisations and environmental agencies. We provide expertise in:

Network Management Policy, Strategy & Safety

  • Change Management

  • Operations & Maintenance consultancy

  • Development of maintenance contracts, including associated process and procedures and performance metrics

  • Improvement of Incident Management

  • Statistical analysis of collisions and development of safety strategies

  • PFI/PPP advice

  • Guidance, standards and specification development

Sustainability & Resilience

  • Climate change risk assessments and development of adaptation measures

  • Construction materials resource efficiency and optimisation

  • Measurement of carbon footprint of construction activities and development of management processes

  • Severe weather planning

  • Emergency Planning

Highway Asset Management

  • ISO 55000 assessments

  • Strategic, tactical and operational advice

  • Investment support/Value Management

  • Whole life costing

  • Asset management plans/lifecycle plans

  • Efficiency, lean and value management

  • Training

Research & Innovation

  • Technology trials

  • Traffic management research

  • Driving simulator research

Recent projects include:

  • Future Maintenance Requirements – supporting the development of the next generation of maintenance contracts (Highways England)

  • Development of a framework that provides a process for understanding and addressing the impacts of climate change on road networks, assets and operations (World Road Association)

  • Development of a structured strategic approach to Climate Change Adaptation and a formal management procedure (Northern Gas Networks, Scottish Canals)

  • Enabling the parallel calculation of whole life cost and whole life carbon parameters (Transport Scotland)

  • Driving simulator trials of revised sign design for roadworks, and alternative traffic management for All Lane Running (Highways England)

Minimum Requirements

No experience is necessary, but applicants must meet suitable acceptance criteria which varies from programme to programme. Criteria can be as little as two or more GCSE grades or equivalent or can reflect an applicant’s prior study at say A-level and gaining of UCAS tariff points. Whatever your stage of career, we can discuss this with you following application. What is important for our apprentices here at AECOM is the following;

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade ‘C/4’ or above, including Maths & English

  • An aptitude towards good logic, problem solving and strong organisational skills

  • An interest in and a desire to pursue a career in transportation

  • Wider interest in the civil infrastructure sector as a whole

  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities

  • Practical, adaptable and enthusiastic

  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills

  • Self-motivated

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, technically proficient, with ambition and drive

  • Basic computer skills essential (Word/Excel) and some report writing skills beneficial
