Principal Bridge Engineer

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Bridge Engineer with experience of bridge design, inspection, assessment and refurbishment schemes, to join our busy and expanding experienced Chesterfield Bridges team.

Our Chesterfield office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for over many years, in the Midlands and also throughout the UK and overseas. The team provides assessment, concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs on a wide range of schemes, either as standalone bridge commissions or as part of multidisciplinary major projects. Our clients are from the private and public sector and include long term Framework Agreements with numerous Local Authorities together with Design and Build commissions for many major Contractors.

Some of our recent projects include;

  • Highways England Smart Motorway Projects (SMP)

  • M6 J21a to 26 and M62 J10-12.

  • M4 Jn 3 to 12, M3 Jn 2 to 4A and M6 Jn 10a-13.

  • Highways England Road Improvement schemes

  • M42 Jn 6 improvements

  • A5-M1 link dual carriageway upgrade

  • Major D&B projects: Mersey Gateway JV

  • CAFA rail bridge inspection and assessment. Long term commission with bridge sites located on the LNW lines.

  • OPSAP inspections and assessments of on station canopies throughout the LNW route.

  • Midlands Highways Alliance – this enables AECOM to provide bridge engineering services to 25 Local Authorities throughout the Midlands

As a Principal Bridge Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Undertake and project manage various engineering schemes from inspection and assessment, feasibility through to detailed design. This may cover rail and/or road bridges and associated structures.

  • Take responsibility for the contribution of Graduate Engineers and Technicians as appropriate.

  • Responsible for production through to client sign off of Technical Approval documentation.

  • Hands on technical design for road and/or rail structures.

  • Hands on assessment of road and/or rail structures.

  • Excellent technical and communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Client liaison.

  • Production of tenders including quality documentation and costings.

  • Project Management including programme and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.

  • Mentoring graduate engineers in their route to Chartership.

Minimum Requirements

  • Significant experience with bridge and related structural inspection, assessment and design schemes. High level technical skills in this area and the ability to lead teams of engineers in such projects.

  • Proven design and project management experience delivering quality work within time and budget.

  • Experience in road and/or rail projects.

  • Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors.

  • Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.

  • A current driving license and willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Chartered Engineer with ICE and IstructE.
