Wood has an exciting new opportunity for a Transport Planning Degree Apprentice in our Birmingham, Leamington Spa or Shrewsbury office. The role will commence from September 2019 and will involve supporting the transport planning teams and working with other professionals across the organisation, including highways engineers and town planners, whilst undertaking a part time work based degree at Aston University in Birmingham.
Aston University has launched a BSc (Hons) Transport Planning Apprenticeship which will run over a five-year period. You will attend three one week teaching blocks in both the Autumn and Spring terms as well as undertaking independent study and research and attend exams in May/June of the 2019/20 academic year. Years 2 – 4 will comprise set modules and further teaching blocks and during Year 5 you will undertake and produce a dissertation. As a Transport Planning Apprentice for Wood, you will be working on a wide range of projects carrying out work according to client specifications across a variety of sectors.
Duties during your apprenticeship may include:
* Site visits * Site surveys * Contribution to the preparation of Transport Assessments and Transport Statements * Contribution to sustainable transport projects, including preparation of Travel Plans; * Contribution to the preparation of Environmental Statements * Use of junction modelling software including Junctions 9 (ARCADY and PICADY) and LINSIG * Opportunity to undertake strategic and microsimulation network modelling using SATURN, VISSIM and PARAMICS * Production of simple highway design drawings in CAD (Computer Aided Design) and using AutoTrack to test vehicle tracking * Supporting the administration of projects
You will be assigned a mentor within your team who will work and liaise closely with you in your day-to-day work. Support will be provided if you wish to work towards chartered membership of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and/or the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification.
Skills / Qualifications
This role requires:
* Three A Levels (or equivalent) –Maths, Geography or Economics would be advantageous * At least Grade 4 or C GCSE English and Grade 5 or C GCSE Maths
Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate:
* Good numerical/maths skills * Good literacy and ability to write brief reports on work undertaken * Ability to manage own time and ability to prioritise at busy times * Creative thought and practical application * Adaptability to changing demands * Interest in pursuing a career within engineering * Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite * Interest in using computers for design work, calculations, and testing designs * Ability to think in a methodical way to plan and organise tasks * Ability to work well with other people in a team environment * Good communication skills within a team and externally
