Childline Volunteer Counsellor

Apply for this job

Could you be there for children?

At Childline, our free counselling service for children, a child contacts us every 25 seconds.

And thanks to our dedicated volunteers, who do a shift each week, we can offer support when it’s needed most.

To make sure it stays that way, we’re looking for more brilliant people who would be available to support the service during holiday periods. Perhaps you can't offer a weekly shift but would still like to join the team and make a difference. If the time you have available is out with term time we would still like to hear from you.

When you get trained and set up in your local base, you’ll be helping real children and young people who simply need someone to talk to. Increasingly, these young people use e-mail to tell us about their worries. So they really need a dedicated team of email counsellors to support them. You will also be trained on the switchboard, as that very important first point of contact for the young people who call.

Interested? Then get ready to take a life-changing step forward – for you and for children.

“Knowing that I’ve been there for a young person when no one else is. That’s special.”
– Atiyah, Volunteer Childline Counsellor

So who are we looking for?

While Childline is committed to training volunteers, applicants do need to meet certain criteria for this role. Can you demonstrate the following traits?

  • A genuine passion for helping children and young people.
  • Good communication skills (written, oral and listening).
  • The desire to make an impact.
  • The ability to work in a team.
  • The ability to deal with stress appropriately.
  • An empathetic and non-judgmental outlook.
  • Emotional resilience.
  • An openness to feedback, learning and continuous improvement.

If this sounds like you, are you able to commit to a 3.75 hour shift once a week for a year? (Flexibility is allowed when unable to attend)

Do I get training?

Yes. To prepare you for the role, you’ll do some initial training.

After you’ve finished, you’ll have the opportunity to continue learning new skills in regular workshops on lots of different topics.

As a volunteer in this role, there would be no set shift that you attend. Helping us during the traditional school holiday breaks is a great way to be there for children and young people and we welcome the support during these times of high demand.

I am interested, what do I do next?

If you are available for training and are inspired to become part of our team, please follow the link to our website where you will be able to apply.
