**Job Title: Materials Scientist, Drug Product Design, Pharmaceutical Sciences**
We are seeking a material scientist to work in a team of research and technical staff engaged in the design, selection and characterisation of pharmaceutical solid forms. Your focus will be on generating high quality solid forms and associated analytical control strategies which are designed to assure robust performance of the solid form within the DP formulation matrix. A crucial part of this role will be to integrate spectroscopy (vibrational and/or nuclear magnetic resonance) into the solid form selection and formulation design process. You will be generating high quality solid state analytical data, including spectroscopy, which probes the structure and stability of materials. You will be responsible for developing experimental plans, translating complex data sets into knowledge and subsequently liaising directly with partners to ensure timely delivery drug product design activities. Furthermore you will provide in depth examination of solid dosage forms through mapping and imaging methods which will generate knowledge of the impact of drug product processing and storage on API physical property attributes. Your data will support both the design and development of 'breakthroughs that change patients' lives.'

**Liaises with:** All levels of staff in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with external academic experts and specialist out-sourcing companies.

+ The application of organic solid state structural knowledge to select solid forms that enhance the robustness of drug products.
+ Generation and interpretation of organic solid state characterization data, including spectroscopic techniques, to allow the characterisation and selection of pharmaceutical solid forms suitable for the intended DP matrix.
+ Apply spectroscopic and diffraction based analytical techniques to optimise the physical stability of the API within the drug product environment. Where appropriate, develop, validate and transfer analytical methods into cGMP facilities.
+ Apply spectroscopy techniques using mapping and imaging methods combined with univariate and multivariate analysis to enable understanding of physical changes of materials within a multi-component system.
+ Utilise high quality analytical, including spectroscopic, data to develop mathematical models capable of predicting the physical stability of the API in its native form and within the drug product environment.
+ Provide interpretation and contextualisation of data and model predictions to project team leaders and where appropriate make recommendations for further studies and/or quality control strategies.
+ Apply materials sciences' computational tools and contribute to the development of novel materials science computational and predictive tools.
+ Develop and maintain a contemporary in-depth understanding of the application of physical property/spectroscopy based analytics to the development of API and pharmaceutical dosage forms.
+ Ensure own work, meets agreed project deliverables and stakeholder needs, maintaining quality and reporting findings either verbally or in written format, both within DPD and the wider Pharmaceutical Sciences project team.
+ Participate on multidisciplinary project teams, and collaborate with colleagues to define and implement characterization strategies according to project timelines.
+ Participate on Pharmaceutical Sciences product development teams in the development of novel drug products.
+ Author regulatory submissions and support the patenting of Pfizer's intellectual property.
+ Oversee and design the work packages of external partners conducting laboratory studies, and provide tactical guidance and critical analysis of raw data.
+ Contribute to the department's operations by taking responsibility for one or more of a number of important roles that ensure the smooth running of the department. Examples of such roles include but are not limited to the following: instrument owner, lab steward, EHS and training roles.
+ Ensure accurate, timely entries are made in e-laboratory notebook system according to accepted good practice. In addition, compile and prepare high quality technical reports in relation to project work.
+ Ensure familiarity / compliance with appropriate documentation (SOPs, instruction manuals, risk assessments, etc.) so that all experimental / manufacturing-related activities are conducted in accordance with approved safety and quality procedures.
+ Drive innovation in application of structural based technologies in solid form selection and solid state spectroscopy. Generate innovative ideas and concepts for developments in second and third horizon areas in materials sciences.
+ Plan and review work schedules to meet deadlines especially in global support models
+ Drive through innovation, and improvements in hardware/software, methodologies that advance spectroscopy applicability to pharmaceutical products.
+ Develop effective interactions within the Materials Sciences community locally and globally. Build relationships with academic centres. Share learnings and collaborate with colleagues in Analytical, Chemical and Manufacturing.

+ PhD in Materials sciences of the organic solid state preferably involving the application of spectroscopy
+ Degree/Masters in Chemistry based discipline with proven experience in the application of spectroscopy to the study of solid organic materials
+ An advanced knowledge of the theoretical understanding and practical application of modern solid state analytical techniques such as spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermal methods
+ A working knowledge of the principles and concepts of drug product design activities.
+ A recognised technical expert and competent contributor in the field area of organic solid state chemistry.
+ Track record of developing creative approaches using new ideas and knowledge to solve solid state based problems
+ Makes decisions that require developing new options to solve moderately complex problems
+ Uses own scientific judgement to apply and adapt standard methods and techniques with increased independence by applying prior work experience
+ Works independently on assignments using knowledge and work experience. Proactively gathers input from colleagues to assist with novel solutions
+ Demonstrated proficiency in background literature searching, interpretation and application of findings and ability to extract essential information from scientific literature
+ Evidence of good time management skills i.e. ability to effectively plan, prioritise and organise own work in response to business need.
