Consultant Stroke Physician – Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Location: Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.

Role Description: Applications are invited for a substantive consultant to join our well-established, dynamic stroke service. The post is full time, however applications from those wishing to work part-time or flexibly will be considered. The Hyperacute Stroke Unit is based in Winchester with clinics provided in Andover, Alton and Basingstoke.

What we look for:

The applicant should hold or be within 6 months of a CCT in a parent specialty e.g. geriatrics, neurology or acute medicine, and have completed a period of specialist stroke training.

• 24/7 thrombolysis, with links to Southampton for thrombectomy
• HASU and rehabilitation inpatient wards
• Daily TIA services
• Established weekend working
• Comprehensive matron-led MDT including daily progress / discharge meetings
• Responsive ESD team
• Extended roles for non-medical staff members e.g. dedicated stroke pathway coordinators working alongside stroke consultants to expedite emergency admissions
• Dedicated MRI and carotid Doppler imaging slots
• Weekly neuroradiology MDT meetings with neurology colleagues facilitate shared management of complex cases

• Strong research portfolio with good recruitment to NIHR and local studies

• Consistently good SSNAP performance

The job plan for this post is predominantly focussed in stroke medicine, however there are opportunities to consider a personalised job plan including participation in the GIM on-call rota or combined roles with geriatrics, neurology or acute medicine. The Trust has a strong educational ethos with links to Southampton Medical School and Winchester University, a successful applicant with special skills in this area would be encouraged to develop these as part of their role.

The post attracts 10 PAs plus 2 PAs for undertaking on-call work.

Nearest airports are Heathrow, Southampton airport and Gatwick. The area is also within easy distance of the New Forest and the South Hampshire Coast both of which constitute an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There are a number of Ofsted-Good and Outstanding primary and secondary schools as well as excellent academies and independent schools in and around Winchester and Basingstoke..
