Do you have expertise in plasma physics and how it impacts on technological choices for fusion devices? Do you have experience in managing collaborative projects?

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is looking for a fusion power systems integrator to work at the interface between plasma science and technology, leading an R&D programme to identify integrated scenarios for fusion plasmas consistent with (national and international) power plant design studies: e.g. EUROfusion`s DEMO and the UK`s Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP).

Specific accountabilities would be to:

Work at the interface between plasma physics, materials science and technology, coordinating a plasma physics programme for fusion reactor design.

Provide world-leading fusion plasma physics expertise to support the Lead Technologist and Chief Scientist, guiding and integrating the work of the 10 STEP power plant Work Packages.

Lead UKAEA involvement in plasma scenario development for EUROfusion`s DEMO and Prospective R&D areas, seeking collaboration opportunities with EUROfusion and other international reactor development programmes.

Build links to UK universities and industry, developing collaborative R&D in integrated plasma scenarios consistent with technological and materials constraints.

Identify and propose science priorities for MAST-U and technology programmes that reduce uncertainties in the development of a self-consistent solution for burning plasmas in future fusion devices.

Lead experiments on MAST-U and elsewhere, delivering high quality research outputs.

Seek opportunities to win contracts (e.g. for ITER), especially at the plasma-technology interface.

Mentor and guide other UKAEA researchers, as well as supervise PhD students and provide teaching support as appropriate.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge skills and experience

- PhD level background in relevant scientific discipline

- World-class expertise in plasma physics and the impact on technological choices

- International reputation including high quality research outputs in the field of expertise

- Experienced in managing technical projects at the several £100K level, including collaborative projects

- Experience of leading successful collaborative research projects and of building external collaborations.

- Excellent written and oral communication

- Experience and knowledge of project management processes

- Experience of working with commercial organisations

- Experience of working across the plasma-materials-technology boundaries.

- Leadership of a research team within a large, multi-million £ project

- Experience in line-management, staff development and recruitment.

- Member or fellow of recognised professional body (e.g. IoP)
