Research Scientist/ Senior Research Scientist, Regeneration Department

Location: Cambridge UK

We are currently looking for an innovative and highly motivated Scientist to join the Regeneration Department within the Early Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity (RIA) in Cambridge, UK. We are looking for a lab-based scientist able to design and develop experimental strategies that make a significant contribution to the progression of drug discovery projects, identification of new targets and publishable scientific insights.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will drive discovery research activities to build scientific knowledge in respiratory diseases and lung regeneration
  • You will utilise biological assays with human primary cells to explore novel mechanisms and biological pathways involved in lung repair and remodelling in chronic lung diseases such as COPD and IPF
  • You will be an effective and innovative team member in supporting drug discovery projects to meet their objectives and timelines
  • You will contribute to writing peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and/or patents
  • You will participate in external collaborations

Essential requirements

  • PhD in a relevant area (e.g. a biological science) and proven ability to independently lead own scientific research
  • An understanding of chronic lung diseases such as COPD, IPF or asthma
  • Strong hands-on experience with the isolation of primary cells from tissue/blood and primary cell culture. Experience with 3D culture or exosomes an advantage
  • Expertise in the evaluation of cellular responses by a broad range of techniques (for example, multi-color confocal microscopy, RNASeq and data analysis, flow cytometry, proteomics)

Desirable requirements

  • Postdoctoral training
  • A strong record of high-quality publications and experience in presenting research to the scientific community
  • Experience in pharmaceutical R&D
  • An understanding of lung development and/or mechanisms involved in tissue regeneration
  • Practical experience with gene editing techniques, siRNA in primary cells, high content imaging
  • Expertise in in vivo models of lung injury/repair

Leadership and behaviors

  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Thorough understanding and practical experience in designing, performing, evaluating and optimising in vitro experiments
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team, and to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
