The Marketing team at York is responsible for brand, visual identity and content production across print and digital media for internal and external audiences. The team works across five key areas of brand development, student recruitment marketing, research and reputation, student experience communications and staff engagement. We work in partnership with colleagues around the whole organisation to create high quality solutions and services to help achieve institutional and departmental goals.

Note that the Directorate of External Relations, in which Marketing is based, is currently undergoing a restructure of its top-level teams. This role is a replacement of an existing post and while the restructure will affect some aspects of how teams are organised, this role is a replacement of an existing post and not directly impacted by higher-level changes.


The role leads the Digital Platforms and Developments team within Marketing, managing a team of five specialists with expertise across front-end development, UX design and research, digital advertising, search and analytics.

The team, and ultimately the holder of this role, is responsible for running the University’s core digital marketing and communications platforms. Principal among these are the University's web CMS (currently supplied by TerminalFour) and our in-house Digital Pattern Library where we develop and maintain the web components used in the CMS and other places. Additional platforms include digital signage (Xibo), a blog platform (Wordpress), email marketing (Campaign Monitor and others), search engine (Funnelback) and more.

The role requires a broad and deep knowledge of digital platforms and how to get the most out of them. It also requires excellent leadership and organisational skills in order to get the best out of a busy team whose services are in high demand.

As the digital landscape and competitiveness of the higher education sector continues to evolve, the role will also lead on how we should respond to that changing environment by crafting and then delivering a strategic plan to build a digital presence for the University that can support the organisation’s long-term goals.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
  • Manage the Digital team, including allocating work, prioritising projects, supporting the development of individual team members and motivating the team as a whole
  • Working closely with colleagues across External Relations and other areas of the organisation, lead the planning and delivery of digital platforms projects to help the University achieve its strategic goals
  • Oversee project and working practice processes, ensuring they are working well and helping the team deliver work on time. Introduce changes as appropriate to improve efficiency
  • Provide regular reports to the Head of Marketing Operations summarising progress on planned work and priorities going forward
  • Develop and lead implementation of a digital roadmap that will enhance the effectiveness of the University’s digital presence for all its audiences through a strategic combination of improved design and user experience, new functionality and additional back-end platform capabilities
  • Take a hands-on approach to implementing and maintaining digital platforms alongside other members of the team
  • Implement a user-focused approach to digital developments, with an emphasis on user testing and research, actionable insights from analytics and implementing best practice in terms of navigation, accessibility and layout
  • Work with the Marketing support team to ensure digital platforms are properly documented and that users of those platforms across the university have access to appropriate support
  • Promote and facilitate collaborative working with colleagues across the University, especially with IT Services and departmental web authors, including developing networks to improve sharing of good practice
  • Motivate and develop all team members, with an emphasis on providing constructive reviews and ongoing support
  • Lead on procurement of new or replacement digital platforms or engagement with outside agencies as required, ensuring delivery on time, on budget and meeting the identified need
  • Contribute to the senior managers group overseeing the broader Marketing team, working collaboratively to help the whole team work effectively together
