An experimental nuclear physics postdoctoral research position is available at the University of Surrey. The position is funded through an STFC Opportunity grant with the following aim:

A novel detection system will be designed, based on simulations and available experimental information for the study of extremely neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions. Identification and separation based on chemical methods, used for super-heavy elements will be merged with conventional nuclear physics techniques. The developed method will be experimentally tested for osmium. This is a proof-of-concept study. Its ultimate aim is to develop a project aimed at building a system to study the properties of neutron-rich nuclei on the r-process waiting path, therefore addressing the question of how and where heavy elements were/are formed in the universe.

The successful candidate will be an integral member of the experimental nuclear physics group and will be involved in the activities aimed to study the structure of heavy neutron-rich nuclei. You will join an established group studying isomeric and beta-unstable nuclei at the limits of experimental accessibility, using gamma-ray, charged-particle and storage-ring techniques. Candidates should have a proven track record of research contributions in experimental nuclear physics.

The successful candidate will work within the Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Physics, where research includes fundamental theoretical and experimental nuclear physics, radiation physics and applications. For further information about the Centre please see www.ph.surrey.ac.uk/cnrp.

Informal enquiries about this vacancy can be made to Professor Zsolt Podolyák (z.podolyak@surrey.ac.uk)

The position is fixed term for twelve months from January 2020.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,866) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,817).
