In contrast to many other regions, Eastern Asia (China) has seen rapid growth in ozone over the past two decades (http://doi.org/10.1525/elementa.243) caused by increases in precursor emissions, predominantly NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOC). Whilst we can observe trends in ozone and NOx, tracking the long-term changes in VOC concentrations is challenging.
The remote Japanese island of Hateruma, off the coast of Taiwan, is subject to air that has seen recent emissions from China. In collaboration with the Japanese National Institute for Environmental Science (NIES), Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) will deploy a VOC measuring instrument to Hateruma to complement existing Japanese instrumentation. The role holder will be involved in the deployment, but focus on the interpretation and exploitation of the dataset. They will use these observations, together with the GEOSChem model of atmospheric chemistry and transport (http://www.geos-chem.org), to better constrain emissions of VOC in the region, improve understanding of trans-boundary air pollution processes and support ozone precursor emission controls policy.
We would expect this individual to conduct individual and collaborative research using appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of results, dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities. The role would also involve some organisational, teaching and administrative activities connected to the project, and where appropriate contribute to the preparation of research funding proposals and applications to external bodies, led by senior staff.Department
