Digital Creativity Labs has an opening for an outstanding early-career AI researcher with appetite to develop an applied AI research profile around interactive media and games. We are looking for competitive candidates who can demonstrate fluency in one or more AI techniques, have experience of software engineering, and have the drive to design and implement prototypes for real-world applications. Experience with interactive media such as games or interactive narrative is desirable but not essential – we will prioritise AI experience and skill over experience with interactive media.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be to develop research around the uses of AI and interactive media and games. This may involve the development of prototypes as well as research output. You will have a key role within the DC Labs as a Research Associate, working on applied AI with external organisations and partners to address questions such as such as “How can we harness data and AI to understand human players and creativity?”, “How can we create more engaging and human-like AI agents?”, or “how can AI support creative processes in games and interactive media?”. We encourage you to develop industrial partnerships to support and inform this work - DC Labs currently works with over 100 partners in games and screen-based media from small local video game manufacturers to large scale institutions such as BBC.

You will conduct individual and collaborative research projects in DC Labs from the perspective of Artificial Intelligence; your duties to include: analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement.

In terms of skills and experience, you will have a PhD or equivalent experience. You will have a record of outputs and collaboration that points to a potential for excellent research. We encourage applicants from all areas of AI, including machine learning, rule-based reasoning, search, knowledge representation, agent-based modelling, evolutionary algorithms, etc. The role advertised here is intentionally not limited to a particular set of AI techniques. We are looking for competitive candidates who can demonstrate fluency in one or more AI techniques, have experience of software engineering, and have the drive to design and implement prototypes for real-world applications.
