We are seeking an experienced and creative Mechanical Engineer to provide engineering services to our in-house team developing the next generation of lab-on-a-chip devices and systems. The primary services provided by the post-holder will be in support of: (a) late-stage development of the company’s instrumentation product; and (b) verification testing of the instrumentation and system.

The post-holder will be expected to apply their technical expertise in mechanical design and thermal interfaces to design, test and analyse the performance of product features in relation to system requirements.Candidates should possess significant experience in the development of new products for the life science industry (or similar) with complex interfaces between components - such as between instrumentation and disposable components. Candidates should also be knowledge about and be able to follow industry best practice for the design and verification of scientific instrumentation in compliance with the ISO13485 quality standard.

The post-holder may additionally be expected to provide additional and ad-hoc mechanical engineering services to other projects within the company, such as the design and development of the disposable microfluidic cartridge.

Services to be provided

  • To perform theoretical analysis of mechanical and thermal features and components including modelling and simulation as may be required
  • To design mechanical and thermal features of the company’s product components and systems including liaising with external suppliers as appropriate
  • To plan and execute experimental studies to evaluate the performance of product components and features
  • To draft and review test plans for the verification of product components and systems
  • To design and commission jigs, fixtures and other equipment required for development and verification testing

In the provision of the services, the post-holder will be responsible for ensuring that their work complies with the company’s Quality Management System and Health & Safety policies. The post-holder will ensure that appropriate design records and other documentation is created and maintained and submitted in a timely manner in accordance with the company’s document management systems.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Minimum 2:1 (Hons) in Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from a leading university
  • Demonstrable history of successfully developing complex mechanical and thermal systems for use in scientific instrumentation (or similar) products
  • Extensive knowledge of general mechanical engineering principles and practices and ability to put these into practise in a fast-moving commercial environment
  • Proficient in CAD software for mechanical design
  • Experience of computational analytical and/or numerical modelling techniques, e.g. Finite Element Analysis / Finite Element Modelling
  • Experience in working within a Quality Management System
  • A creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral and written means at all levels in an organisation

Desirable:

  • Masters or PhD degree in physics, mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • Relevant industrial experience in a similar role
  • Experience of FEA/FEM model development and simulation using COMSOL
  • Proficient in use of SolidWorks
  • Experience of product development for medical devices
  • Experience working within an ISO13485 compliant QMS
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers developing products including mechanical, optical and electronic components
