Leishmaniasis is a globally important parasitic disease with over 1M new cases each year across 98 countries. The York Biomedical Research Institute boasts one of the largest groups of researchers working on leishmaniasis in academia, with partnerships in >20 countries. We seek to generate significant new knowledge about the parasite, host - parasite interactions and the immune mechanisms leading to host protection and pathology, using an iterative, multidisciplinary approach (in silico, in vitro and in vivo models, clinical research and clinical trials). The post is funded by a MRC-FAPESP Joint Centre Partnership award between the University of York and the University of Sao Paulo and is funded for two years.Role
We are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral scientist to carry out research on the microenvironmental control of myeloid cell function during leishmaniasis. You will develop and utilise technologies for single cell transcriptomics and work with others to apply these in conjunction with advanced imaging modalities (e.g. MALDI-MS, GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiling). You will conduct an independent research project using tissue samples derived from clinical cohorts in endemic countries and from animal models of infection, whilst also working with a larger team. You will also analyse and interpret research data, write up research results, and disseminate results through publications, lab meetings, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities.Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
You will have a PhD in immunology or a related discipline. You will have knowledge of and interest in myeloid cell biology, research skills and expertise in cellular and or molecular immunology, specialist IT knowledge, knowledge of flow cytometry, imaging and or immunohistochemistry and a general understanding of immunology / immunity to infectious disease. Previous experience in single cell technologies and or imaging will be beneficial, but experience of working with pathogens is not essential. Experience with omics analysis pipelines would also be beneficial but not essential.
You will have an excellent track record of research evidenced through publications. You should be highly motivated, and able to engage with scientists, clinicians and other research staff to deliver your research. The ability to travel to endemic countries (e.g. Brazil , East Africa) and spend at least one month per year overseas is essential.
