This role is responsible for effective senior leadership of the new commercial workshop which has been built as part of a £9m redevelopment of the Pembroke Road site. The site encompasses a busy and daily operational waste transfer station, which is accessed by 170 front line waste, street cleansing and horticultural employees.
The role holder will be the qualified Authorised Examiner Designated Manager (AEDM) responsible for leading a team of skilled HGV Mechanics that ensure an in-house fleet of 70+ 3.5-32t vehicles are maintained and serviced in addition to completing public MOTs across the Aylesbury area.
The role is responsible for workshop compliance in regards to both legislative requirements of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the health and safety practices within a high risk operational area. Failure to meet these requirements would have serious and damaging consequences on the council’s delivery of services. The role holder must therefore ensure that both statutory and commercial services are delivered to the highest standard and in adherence with legislation and industry standards.
The role holder will be confident in making reactive, operational decisions to ensure that the requirements of the services can continually be delivered in a fast paced, challenging and reactive setting.About us

You will form part of a passionate and enthusiastic Senior Management Team within Operational Delivery of Neighbourhood Services. The team is responsible for the strategic delivery of frontline statutory and commercial services across waste, street cleansing and horticulture. You will be part of the backbone for ensuring these services are delivered to the highest of standard by maintaining a large in-house fleet of heavy goods vehicles for service delivery.
The team work flexibly Monday-Friday, often on site at Pembroke Road or working from home. You will form part of a Senior on site Duty Manager rota which ensures there is a competent and hands on manager on site each day to support services and the teams.
No two days are ever the same. Despite structured workloads with vehicle maintenance and MOT testing, the role is reactional based with on the ground practical and sensible decision making required to problem solve.
The role is responsible for developing the commercial aspirations of the workshop and to deliver the expected income targets set within the business plan.
The role fits into the largest in house front facing operation of the Council within Neighbourhood Services which is part of the Communities Directorate.
You will be fundamental to developing and growing the new workshop and ensuring the council operates in a commercially minded way. You will be responsible for decision making and budget accountability, with the autonomy to present ideas for change and improvement.
