Apply for this job

The Department seeks to appoint a Senior Research Associate to work full time for 36 months on a project using computational modelling to understand processes of typical and atypical word learning. This project is part of the ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development (LuCiD).

You will have a PhD, or have submitted your dissertation for a PhD by the start date. Your PhD should be in psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, or a related area. You should have a thorough working understanding of computational modelling of language acquisition and/or psycholinguistics, experience with implementing and testing artificial neural network models, and a beginning track-record of conference presentations and publications.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary and cross-institutional team that includes academics from the Department of Psychology and the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University as well as academics from the University of Manchester and the University of Liverpool.

You will design and implement artificial neural network models of word learning and test these models in terms of word learning trajectories in typical and atypical development, evaluating their performance against results reported in the scientific literature. You will present the results of the analyses to both academic and non-academic audiences through different media.

The Department actively supports open science initiatives, including the development of good research practices, regular meetings of our Open Science group, and the embedding of research integrity within our teaching curriculum and postgraduate training.
