University of St Andrews, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Updated for 2020/21, the MSc in Mineral Resources at the University of St Andrews is a one-year postgraduate degree designed to prepare students for the challenges in resource extraction in the 21st century. It will tackle not only the geological challenges inherent in mineral exploration targeting and estimation, but also the economic, environmental, social, and geopolitical aspects of mining: from exploration, extraction to remediation.

The MSc in Mineral Resources provides hands-on training in both the classroom and the field in the latest digital and remote sensing mapping techniques and 3D modelling software. Students gain knowledge and experience through interactions with invited guest lecturers from industry and by visiting mine sites. Knowledge is consolidated through both an industry or research focussed dissertation.

The keystone of the course is a two-week field trip to visit world class mineral deposits and associated geology in South Africa. Students will consolidate knowledge gained and see mining operations in a variety of deposit types first hand.

The MSc is targeted at both new graduates seeking a career in the resources industry and/or preparation for an applied PhD, but also at professional exploration geologists with several years industry experience seeking to move into an exploration strategy role.
