The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is the UK's national institute for advanced materials research and innovation. With its hub at The University of Manchester, the Institute is a partnership of nine leading institutions " the universities of Cambridge, Liverpool Leeds, Oxford, Sheffield, Imperial College London, the UK Atomic Energy Authority and National Nuclear Laboratory. Through its vision of 'Advanced Materials for a Sustainable Society', the £235m institute will allow the UK to grow its world-recognised excellence in UK materials research, accelerating the commercial exploitation of innovations and delivering positive economic and societal impact for the UK.
As we move into our new £105m Hub Building, this is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role as the Royce establishes itself as the UK centre for catalysing industrial collaboration and the exploitation of advanced materials research. We are looking for an experienced professional to work with the CEO to instigate, drive and deliver a cohesive technology translation and commercialisation strategy for the institute, to network nationally with relevant academic, government and industry partners, and to manage a team of research and business development staff.
As part of the Royce Senior Leadership Team, the Head of Business Engagement will take a strategic lead in delivering the Royce's industry collaboration, research development and foresighting programmes, and will implement a translation strategy to maximise the exploitation of research and technologies. You will negotiate and manage industrial research collaborations, ensuring that projects are established and coordinated appropriately and that deliverables are met and reported. You will also build and maintain strong relationships with the relevant funding bodies, government departments and policy-makers so that the Royce can both drive and capitalise on policy changes.
Experience of working in an interdisciplinary research environment, and a degree or equivalent in science, engineering or a relevant discipline are both essential requirements. You will have a track record of success in coordinating large funding proposals and bids, or of securing external income, and you will be target-driven with a good understanding of how companies engage with academic partners. Your relationship management and influencing skills will be key in this role, combined with interpersonal skills that focus on clarity, simplicity and results.
As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
