The Department of Psychology at Nottingham Trent University
The Psychology Department at Nottingham Trent University is seeking additional lecturers in psychology to further strengthen our research and to meet the demands of new course provision and increased student numbers in our undergraduate, MSc and doctoral programmes. We welcome applications from all areas of psychology and we particularly welcome applications that can contribute to our ambition to enhance the diversity and critical awareness of our curricula.
Psychology at NTU
We are the largest provider of fulltime undergraduate psychology courses in the UK and attract eyewatering numbers of applications and hence students. Our most popular course is the single honours degree and to manage the numbers on that degree we are now segmenting it into pathways focused towards our MSc courses. We aim to integrate all levels of our teaching as much as possible and to also draw on our research activity to inform our sessions with students.
We have four research clusters which house 12 active research groups. We have particular expertise in gambling, driving, sleep, bullying and forensic psychology. We support research at all levels and although we are currently focused on the REF we recognize that this is not the only measure of research quality and value. We support staff to develop a research plan that fits within the wide research activity of the Department.
You will be joining a very large, lively, diverse, collegiate and ambitious group with an excellent reputation for its theoretically informed impactful and applied research and its teaching provision at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
In the submission to REF2014 (Unit of Assessment A04,http://www.ref.ac.uk/) 60% of our research outputs were identified as internationally excellent or world leading and 100% of our research impact was recognised as internationally excellent with 73% described as world leading. Our commitment to teaching is shown by the collaboration of over 50 staff to create an introductory text for SAGE (3rd edition published in 2019) and by our showing in the National Student Survey (NSS) where our seven year average approval score is not bettered by any university in the UK.
Ongoing strategic investment in terms of staffing numbers, the continuing professional development of staff, research support, laboratory facilities and funded PhD students continues to allow us to develop further and to meet the ambitions of the University’s strategic plan across the full range of our activities.
Applicants will have a PhD or professional doctorate in Psychology (or equivalent). You should be an enthusiastic teacher with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to supporting students' development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Mentoring and support for development in both teaching and research will be provided to appointees appropriate to their level of experience.
The Department is committed to diversity and provides a lead in the University on initiatives such as Success for All and Athena Swan where we became the first department in the University to achieve accreditation last year.
