Due to the significant growth in our Haywards Heath engineering team, we currently have a vacancy for a senior / principal geotechnical engineer who wishes to work on a variety of projects including national scale coastal and fluvial defence schemes, ports, harbour and bridge design. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and/or support to civil/structural engineering projects within fluvial, tidal and coastal environments, including major Flood and Coastal Risk Management schemes. This role is pivotal to the delivery of a range of engineering and environmental improvement projects, including options appraisal, concept design and detailed scheme design. The post will involve leading and/or supporting geotechnical design and delivery of a variety of projects and will include guiding and mentoring more junior Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists. You will also undertake site works and input to bid and tender preparation
Location: The post will be based in our Haywards Heath office, RH16 3BW and will work closely with engineers and other technical staff from across JBA’s offices. You would be joining a dynamic team who are enjoying project success which has been recognised by recent industry awards.

The post will involve leading geotechnical design and delivery of a variety of projects, mentoring junior engineers and reporting to the Structures Engineering Technical Director.
It is essential that you have experience working in engineering consultancy. You will have expertise in the investigation and design of earthworks, retaining walls and foundations. You must be able to scope, organise and supervise ground investigations and carry out geotechnical analysis and design to Eurocodes. You must be familiar with the CDM Regulations and their application within a design environment. The role will include the mentoring of junior geotechnical engineers and therefore good communication skills are essential.
Chartered status is important to JBA and valued by our clients. Applicants should be a chartered or close to becoming chartered and have a proven track record in geotechnical design project delivery. Substantial proven previous commercial experience is required for this position.

Key competencies required for the role:
JBA Consulting is a client-focused organisation. Excellent report writing and effective communication skills are therefore essential to this role. Candidates should have a sound appreciation for engineering principles and good analytical skills for problem solving. Self-motivation and a high degree of organisation are also considered key attributes.
A valid UK driving license and willingness to travel to sites and other offices are essential.
Qualifications and Experience
An undergraduate degree in engineering geology or geotechnics is essential. An MSc / MEng in a related discipline would be advantageous.
Expertise with respect to the following core skills is expected:
• Geotechnical engineering design
• Geotechnical analysis and design to Eurocodes
• Earthworks, retaining walls and foundations
• Application of CDM Regulations in a design and ground investigation environment
• Scope, organise and supervise ground investigations
• Mentoring of junior staff
• Experience in the design of maritime specific foundations such as ground anchored sheet piles and laterally loaded piles would be beneficial.
Experience using the following software would be beneficial but is not essential:
• Geostudio Slope W /Seep W
Previous professional experience within a consultancy environment is essential. Successful candidates will be required to demonstrate and evidence, a proven track record in the following:
• Leading and QA of geotechnical engineering analysis and design
• Leading and mentoring junior engineers
• Project Management
