The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a pioneer at the heart of an international endeavour to shape the future of energy production - by delivering the world`s first commercial fusion reactors. In so doing, we will deliver a clean, limitless and abundant source of baseload power for all humankind.

A key challenge for power plant design is the need to develop and integrate many different technologies and systems - from the complex physics of plasma that exists in a state ten times hotter than the core of the Sun, to the new materials that will have to exist in one of the harshest environments known to humankind. As we explore ways to accelerate the realisation of fusion energy, we must establish greater integration between physics, technology and engineering. This is driving rapid growth at UKAEA to exploit new capabilities, creating exciting opportunities for talented, driven individuals to be part of a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team.

Advanced Computing lies at the heart of our research, engineering and technology programmes: for controlling existing fusion experiments to simulating future ones, from cutting-edge robotics applications to digital engineering design. The disruptive technologies of the Exascale, whether they be the world`s largest supercomputers or new advances in data science around Artificial intelligence will play a major enabling role in the development of the world`s first commercial reactors.

We are seeking talented, committed individuals at all levels of their career who are keen to push the boundaries of "the possible" - to drive disruption in plant operations, our science, in our engineering design and in modelling and simulation by exploiting emergent technology at the vanguard of High Performance Computing and Data Science.

To meet these needs, we have a number of opportunities available, including:

- High Performance Computing experts
- Cloud systems architects
- Research Data Management specialists
- Data scientists
- Experts in Artificial Intelligence
- Computational scientists and engineers / algorithms specialists and
- Technical leaders and architects.

These individuals will work with our national and international partners to help drive a step change in national capability in these areas and to help deliver the world`s first working fusion reactors.

You will help to drive UKAEA`s capabilities and software stack into a new era by developing codes and infrastructure for the Exascale (e.g. as part of the ExCALIBUR project:

cloud data systems focusing upon next generation modelling and simulation for engineering design (e.g. linked to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) project), or for developing state of the art AI based analytics for turning Big Data into invaluable knowledge (working with Universities, STFC and the Alan Turing Institute).

The culture at UKAEA promotes research, innovation and leading-edge technological excellence, whilst investing in its people.
