Here at Severn Trent, we are currently looking for a Senior Hydroecologist to join us on a permanent basis at our flagship head office in Coventry.

Over the next five years, Severn Trent are delivering a series of complex environmental investigations, looking at bodies of water across the Severn Trent Water region. These investigations will determine the environmental impact that Severn Trent has. The outputs of these investigations will contribute to us achieving the objectives if the European Water Framework Directive and will inform a key strand of the future water resources capital investment plan. As a Senior Hydrogeologist, you will provide hydro-ecology advice for our environmental investigations, impact assessments and investment options appraisals with the objective of informing our investment plans. The programme of works covers the whole of the Severn Trent region and is delivere4d using Severn Trent’s in-house technical experts and specialist consultants. As a Senior Hydroecologist you will work with Severn Trent’s senior management team and external stakeholders such as the Environment Agency. You will have the professional and personal credibility to represent Severn Trent Water nationally, influence key stakeholders in the leadership team, Government and regulators, demonstrating environmental leadership and innovation. As part of this role you will be expected to show courage and always look to do the right thing. Let’s talk about some of the key accountabilities of the position...

• To engage and influence the EA and other stakeholders on how we can best achieve the objectives of the Water Framework Directive without putting the security of customers’ water supplies at risk. • Defines and delivers hydrological technical improvements / projects needed to achieve desired business performance or environmental best practice, and project manage supporting technical consultants as necessary. • Leads and delivers hydroecological technical work streams of defined business improvements plans • To inform the design of environmental mitigation measures and water resource solutions for inclusion in Water Resources Management Plan 2024 / Price Review 24 plan.

The skills and experience required to be successful include…

• An understanding of freshwater biology and ecology and the relationship between ecology and flow, including knowledge of the latest developments in the field • An understanding of water resources management, including abstraction licensing and Severn Trent’s water resources. • Good knowledge of Environmental legislation, especially with respect to water resources • Experience of scoping and carrying out ecological monitoring programmes and impact assessments • Collaborated or lead on technical / scientific papers for influencing industry groups and societies • The ability to deal with complex data analysis and modelling and sourcing a wide range of data from numerous external and internal sources • Good understanding of UK abstraction licencing policy, of best practice approaches to deployable output modelling and of water resources planning

Qualifications

• MSc qualified in an environmental science, or other equivalent status • It would be desirable to be a member of at least one relevant professional body (e.g. CIWEM). • Full driving license
