Your Responsibilities : At GSK, we are poised to transform drug discovery by taking advantage of the genetic clues behind disease. Our new approach to R&D will leverage human genetics, functional genomics and advanced analytics to improve the probability of successfully developing new medicines. In our newly formed Functional Genomics Department we're industrializing techniques, such as, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and complex in vitro models, genome editing, cellular endophenotyping and single cell technologies to discover genetically validated novel therapeutic targets. Information from our internal experimentation will be combined with data from our strategic partners, Laboratory for Genomic Research, Altius, Open Targets, and others, allowing our scientists to help drive the best opportunities into our drug discovery pipeline.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Investigator level scientist with extensive experience in implementing induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation platforms of human in vitro cellular models. The successful candidate will be based within the Tissue and Cell Sciences department and will be responsible for leading and implementing culture, differentiation and extensive validation of human iPSCs models, using both cellular and functional assays and multi-omic approaches. The candidate will also be expected to have knowledge of gene editing technologies for disease modelling and/or screening in both human iPSCs and other human cell systems. The candidate will be expected to lead multi-disciplined matrix groups and design and implement innovative capabilities across multiple projects to support a number of key disease indications in oncology and immunology.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • iPSC culture maintenance and differentiation. • Design, implement and lead novel physiological and disease relevant human cell culture systems to support cell-based screening assays (stem cells, primary cells, organoids). • Evaluate and use innovative technologies to enable genome editing (CRISPR/Cas9) procedures in human iPSCs and primary cells and apply these to support ongoing target discovery and validation efforts. • Lead small teams or matrix groups to enable delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard. • Bring expertise to develop scientific strategy across projects, department teams or initiatives. • Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, safety, training, standards and practices.

Basic qualifications: • PhD and postdoc or equivalent experience in cellular or molecular biology • Experience in human iPSC culture and knowledge of differentiation pathways and phenotypic assays • Experience using gene editing technologies for cellular disease models (KO; KI) • Expertise in molecular biology techniques: PCR, qPCR, NGS, construct design/cloning, CRISPR, shRNA, western blot • Experience in developing cellular assays such as Flow Cytometry, ELISA and high content imaging • Ability to formulate and communicate a coherent research plan with leadership of scientific projects • Excellent team-working behaviors and communication skills • Strong analytical skills and data analysis coupled with the ability to problem solve • Highly committed, enthusiastic, self-motivated with a passion for learning
Preferred qualifications: • Experience in primary cultures and complex in vitro models for drug discovery (e.g. organoids, 3D models) • Track record of applying cellular functional analysis for target ID, validation and pathway studies • Experience in performing genome-wide or focused CRISPR screens (arrayed or pooled format) • Knowledge of HTS, target identification and target validation strategies using human cell lines • Knowledge of multi-omics approaches for target identification and validation • Knowledge of pharmacological principles and the ability to interpret the effects of drugs in complex cellular assay systems. • Strong enterprise behavior working within multidisciplinary teams
