About us

The Tree Service are responsible for ensuring public trees are maintained for the long-term benefit of the communities that they enhance and contribute to. Oxfordshire County Council is responsible for approximately 400,000 public trees along the ~4600km of public highway that we manage and maintain.

Our service works closely with a variety of departments and functions within the County Council - as well as the public, parish councils and other stakeholders - to deliver a holistic approach to tree maintenance and management to maximise benefit.

Although the Tree Service’s predominant function is to maintain Highway assets, we offer advice and support to other departments that have a responsibility for trees across the County Council’s land holdings.

About the role

Tree Officers are the Council’s specialists in all matters relating to trees. This includes arboricultural management and processes; dealing with enquiries; and resolving public complaints concerning the Council’s tree stock.

You will oversee and implement tree management covering approximately half the County in partnership with colleagues whilst ensuring a holistic approach to tree management across the County. You will also deliver tree management in accordance with current best practice, legislation and the Council’s tree policy.

The role comes with plenty of variety and is focused on problem solving in an innovative way to educate and enhance decision making. The role includes but is not limited to: large-scale parish surveys; ad-hoc inspections; building strong working relationships with tree contractors to enable better outcomes for our communities; interaction with members of the public and Council staff; opportunities to create your own projects; expectation to manage your own time to enable delivery of work; ownership of an area for which there is personal responsibility with continuous support from the team.

The post reports directly to the Principal Officer – Arboriculture who manages the Tree Service to design and deliver tree survey protocols and programmes to meet and develop a pro-active approach to tree management by implementing a cyclical inspection regime.

We are looking for a pro-active, innovative and motivated arboriculturist to join our service to help us deliver our aims and objectives across the County to benefit the landscape and the communities we serve.
