DevOps Engineer for HPC and Engineering Software

We have a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced DevOps HPC Linux System Engineer to help support and grow our compute infrastructure used in the development of our next-generation satellite terminal technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for administrating a Linux based HPC environment in our Reading offices and with our cloud provider. As DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the HPC infrastructure, employing industry practices for scheduling and virtualization of computing tasks, training and assisting users on deploying and running their application on HPC, running security audits, and supporting future upgrades. This position requires a broad mixture of skillsets, and includes aspects of system administration, IT, systems programming & scripting, computational science and engineering, DevOps, and end-user support.

You will need to have experience configuring server & storage solutions and working on complex computer systems to solve engineering problems. The nature of the role calls for candidates that are team players, value the understanding of the big picture and end project goals, and feel strongly about making the best out of the available resources. You will be working closely with our engineering team to support and deploy their applications to HPC, and will gain exposure to a range of engineering domains. A background and experience in Linux system administration, standard networking and virtualized networking practices, scripting and general software development, schedulers and virtualization is essential. Experience in writing or running Multiphysics engineering software in HPC environments is ideal.

Responsibilities:

  • Administrating a Linux HPC Environment, automation of recurring engineering and system administration, monitoring and maintenance tasks.
  • Balance a high degree of responsiveness to end-user requests for support with a continued focus on long-term goals and improvement to the system.
  • Work with engineering teams to deploy and optimize their application in an HPC system, which involves a mix of commercial and in-house software while ensuring optimum and efficient resource usage.
  • Investigate and resolve computational performance issues related to in-house-developed and commercial computational codes.
  • Develop and maintain scripts to automate repetitive tasks or software tools to enhance user support of HPC systems and the engineering team in general.
  • Manage and upgrade hot/cold data infrastructures for critical engineering data as required.
  • Train and assist new users on accessing cluster resources.
  • Build user and system documentation.
  • Work in tandem with the IT & in-house engineering teams to support the use of the HPC system and their interoperation with the rest of the company computing and software resources.
  • Maintenance of faulty hardware, specification, procurement, and installation of new hardware, and perform security audits.
  • Lead the design, cost analysis, procurement, and implementation of upgrades for the HPC system and infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in administrating a multi-node Linux system, including system, network and storage configuration, development of automation tools, user management, and software installation.
  • Experience in analysing, optimizing, and debugging cluster system issues.
  • Experience in shell & system scripting (bash, make, Dockerfile).
  • Experience deploying in-house built and commercial simulation tools on HPC (e.g. Ansys, ADS, Matlab, Xilinx, Altium, Cadence, Solidworks, PDK) and licensing management software.
  • Strong programming skills with Python and/or Matlab/Octave.

Desirable

  • Experience using or managing engineering software (e.g. Ansys, ADS, Matlab, Xilinx, Altium, Cadence, Solidworks, PDK).
  • Experience with cloud technologies (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google cloud).
  • Experience in security best-practices for Linux systems.
  • Multi-OS authentication & authorization (e.g., joining Linux to Windows Domain Controllers).
  • Experience configuring schedulers (e.g. SGE or SLURM).
  • Experience in all steps of HPC hardware procurement and commissioning while meeting cost and performance requirements.
  • Experience in DevOps-style automation, monitoring and software development support tasks.
  • Experience in Lustre file system and configuring SAMBA shares.

Our Offices and Covid Secure Working

We operate out of the UK and USA, with our Head Quarters in Reading. As a pre-revenue start-up, there is lots of fast moving change and development so our UK team are based in modern offices in Reading, Berkshire (COVID-19 permitting!). This means that everyone can be involved and play their part in key stages of the work we are developing.
