This is a position that works across all of our development teams to identify and leverage potential performance gains/improvement in our systems and software applications. As a Senior Performance Engineer, you will be involved in multiple work streams across a varied and complex technology stack that is built to provide rich, easy to use and exciting customer experience. Within this role you’ll be expected to leave no stone unturned with regards to systems performance!
You’ll need to comfortable with taking on technical challenges, being flexible and open minded in your approach to solving problems and engineering truly high-quality solutions. We foster a knowledge sharing and learning environment, this means you‘ll have the opportunity to teach and champion performance across all teams in E-commerce.
As an experienced performance engineer you’ll be accountable and responsible for delivery of performance testing, improvements and measurements of both hardware and software, where needed you’ll use your experience to advise teams and help troubleshoot issues, in many cases you’ll be hands on with working with both developers and DevOps engineers. There is also the opportunity to work fully remotely.
The core aspect of this role is to analyse our application and infrastructure stack to understand where we can leverage performance optimisation and clearly articulate to senior management a road map of performance improvements that we should undertake. To deliver the road map you’ll need to be comfortable in measuring the current system, working alongside development teams to implement/test a change and then measure the deployed change using a variety of tooling to ensure the outcomes were achieved.
On a day to day basis you’ll work with teams to understand current performance, where needed you will get hands on with designing and building tests to do this. With a firm understanding of the problem you will be required to work with developers, architects and DevOps engineers to help engineer a solution to a problem.
From the outset you will be expected to build a strong understanding of our architecture, as we evolve our performance there will be expectation to ensure we stay speedy, this will be through tests both within our delivery pipeline and outside it.
Where needed you should consider open source tools over commercially available ones, you should be able to present these internally to the E-commerce management team and our system architect. The core
You’ll need to be comfortable using multiple data sources to analyse current performance before formulating approach to tackle the problem. We measure success through data, you should be comfortable and experienced in producing reports that highlight performance changes to your peers and senior colleagues.
You’ll need to be hard-working, self-motivated, care about doing things the ‘right way’ and be passionate about building and delivering cutting edge web services for large audiences. We are strong advocates of working with the Agile methodology and as such you bring with you experience of this and help champion this way of working across our teams and with our junior engineers. When identifying or presenting solutions to large problems, we prefer the little and often approach towards solving the issue and this should form the core part of your way of working.
As a member of the E-commerce team you should be passionate about sharing knowledge with colleagues, celebrating wins and helping junior engineers through workshops and/or pairing.

You would also be encouraged to engage in training, conferences, and other exercises such as hackathons to continuously broaden your skills.
