The postholder will support the business in completing engineering designs and design sign-off, provide technical support to clients and specifiers, and lead the technical development of all products and systems. The postholder will provide guidance to distributors and other key stakeholders to ensure successful product and project delivery whilst ensuring regulatory compliance and observing industry best practice.

Key Tasks & Accountabilities

  • Responsible for utilising in house and proprietary design software for the engineering design and specification of products and systems
  • Produce construction specifications, calculations and details for the business and its distributors to relevant quality standards
  • Manage a small team of design engineers
  • Check principles, design calculations and drawings produced by others
  • Attend design team meetings and projects sites to review design issues and inspect products in their constructed state, advising where applicable on any non-conformities and producing relevant reports
  • Ensure the requirements of CDM 2015 and other health and safety related standards are followed by the business and its distributors
  • Share involvement in the development of design tools and proprietary software – developments may be completed by third parties where the postholder will assist in software specification and complete quality assurance of third party works
  • Interface with all employees, customers, suppliers, appointed assessment bodies and other stakeholders as necessary in a positive, constructive, and non-biased manner
  • Take a proactive approach to personal work commitments by achieving deadlines agreed with seniors – manage workload in an effective and diligent manner, reporting all conflicts in deadlines and activities in a timely fashion
  • Adopt a flexible approach to workload whilst demonstrating a willingness to take on additional tasks within reason
  • Make recommendations for improvements to design procedures and other working practices that will lead to improved business performance KPI’s
  • Produce copywrite for marketing literature and technical guidance documents
  • Provide support, education, coaching, awareness training and Tool Box Talks to all levels of staff within the business and to distributors and clients with reference to product design and application, to improve understanding and ability
  • Keep clients and stakeholders involved within all relevant decision making, keeping adequate records of communications
  • Produce monthly technical reports for the business and accurately summarise all ongoing activities and developments
  • Maintain the satisfaction of existing clients and develop customer relations
  • Work with colleagues to develop a culture which addresses problems or non-conformity issues to enable positive improvements
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of cold-formed steel products and systems – primarily composite slabs, purlins, side-rails, mezzanine floors, and light gauge steel framing
  • Ensure continued professional development through CPD activities and partaking in relevant courses and self-study
  • Ensure that the goals and objectives of the company are exceeded
  • Complete any other reasonable task as delegated by management

Essential Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience of working with structural steel and/or cold-formed steel / light gauge steel framing
  • Working knowledge and experience using Eurocodes, British Standards, associated industry standards, and statutes
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a structural design or building-products role, including at least 2 years spent within a senior position
  • Have a sound knowledge of construction and structural design
  • Able to lead a small team of design engineers


  • Experience of designing light gauge steel building systems
  • Experience of designing composite structural elements
  • Knowledge of building physics and fire engineering
  • Knowledge of modern methods of construction
  • Experience of CAD, CAE, FEA, and/or BIM

Academic & Professional Qualifications Essential:

  • BSc, BEng, MSc, or MEng qualified (or equivalent experience) in relevant engineering subject (Civil, Structural or Mechanical)


  • CEng Chartered Engineer (MICE, MIStructE, or MIMechE)
